Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, WV sits on old strip-mine land the LaRosa family bought back in the late 70s. They spent almost 10 years working with Pete Dye to turn it into a golf course, and instead of hiding the mining history, they built the whole thing around it.

You drive through an actual mine shaft to get from one hole to the next. There’s a coal car sitting at the front gate. Black cinder bunkers on 6. An old coal train parked along the dogleg on 10.

The build took so long that Dye’s style changed while they were still working on it — the front holes look like his Oak Tree National stuff, the back holes look more like Whistling Straits.

It’s private, it’s ranked one of the best courses in the country, and it might be the most West Virginia golf course that exists.
