When Grammy-nominated contemporary gospel artist Travis Malloy looks at Pittsburgh, he sees the streets where his ambitions first took shape.

He dreamed of living in a mansion while driving through Mount Washington and Shadyside; he imagined owning the car of his dreams when passing the Porsche dealership on Baum Boulevard. Watching concerts at Point State Park and the Civic Arena got him to imagine being a famous singer one day.

“Every dream I ever had started on those streets,” Malloy said from his spacious loft in Atlanta, where he has lived for close to eight years.

This weekend, those dreams come full circle when the singer, songwriter and producer returns home for two sold-out performances Sunday, with Urban Worship Collective, at the intimate City Winery Pittsburgh in the Strip District.

Though he recently played in New York, for Malloy, a hometown audience carries a different kind of weight.

“It’s different when you sell out your hometown,” he said. “It’s a different feeling when you are looking into an audience of people that helped you become who you are.”
