Una tarde divertida y deliciosa! Ana Cristina Velez treated her advanced Spanish students to authentic Latin food and an afternoon of conversation at Espetinho Carioca, a Brazilian restaurant in downtown Pittsfield.

Students, with Sra. Velez and Director of Athletics Dr. Katrina Hall, ordered en español and chatted throughout the meal en español, impressing the proprietors with their conversational skills. 👍

“My degree from MCLA gave me the foundation to start a business, especially with my accounting concentration,” said Mariana Melo ’22. At her family's restaurant, Espetinho Carioca in Pittsfield, Mariana takes care of most of the finances, and says she would have been lost without her education.

"I was fresh out of college, and the degree allowed me to take the first step, be more organized, know how to market the business, and do the taxes; it helped me a lot.”

While Espetinho Carioca serves delicious food — pastels (Brazilian empanadas), salgadinhos (fried snacks), signature skewers, sandwiches, desserts, and more — the business aims to be more than just a restaurant.

“Since the beginning, we’ve always wanted to provide food, but also share culture,” Mariana said.

Coxinhas are a classic Brazilian treat, and we are often asked if they are included on our menu. The answer is YES, absolutely! We can’t get enough of them! Coxinhas are a type of salgadinho, one of our favorite appetizers! 🍗🇧🇷

While we love our other salgadinhos, like bolinhas de queijo (cheese balls), coxinha will always hold the top spot for us! #1 in our hearts! 💚💙💛
