To My Friends, Family, and Listeners of my "Quiet Storm" Radio Program:

For the second time in as many months, I had been forced to put everything "on hold" to deal with a major health crisis. That you are now reading this message is a small miracle, as my latest health crisis is one that many in my situation could have died from.

You may recall that on March 5, I was hospitalized for treatment of congestive heart failure. On April 24, I was hospitalized again, this time for a pulmonary embolism -- specifically, a massive blood clot in my lungs.

For a solid week, I had to take blood thinners to dissolve the clot, which not only triggered painful spasms but also made breathing very difficult. The embolism had also badly suppressed my appetite by triggering near-constant nausea and vomiting -- to the point that, by the time I was readmitted to the hospital, I had to literally force-feed myself. I was finally discharged from the hospital on Friday.

That these twin episodes struck within weeks before and after my 66th birthday on April 8 has certainly shocked me into a heightened awareness of my mortality. Up until March 5, my primary care doctor had told me that had been remarkably healthy for a man my age.

But I always knew that I had a hereditary risk of contracting heart disease, as my mother (48), my aunt (60) and two of my first cousins (49 and 54) had all died of heart attacks. All four were heavy chain smokers. Their deaths prompted me to never start smoking and I had been quite health conscious ever since. But the one thing that did me in was my diet. Way, way too much salt. Now, I'm on a strict low-salt regimen.

***

I'm returning to work next week, but on a greatly reduced schedule. For obvious reasons, I can no longer work six-hour shifts anymore.

As for "The Quiet Storm," the show will continue -- it's been my creative baby for more than 20 years and I'm not about to give that up. That said, however, regular production of the program will remain suspended an extra week, to give me time to recuperate. Accordingly, reruns of the program, pulled from the Pacifica Radio archives, will air the weeks of May 6-12 and May 13-19. Full production will resume on Monday, May 13.

As this point, I'm very grateful to be alive.

Sincerely,
Skeeter Sanders
