Nigerians do not need glasses to see that Nigeria Poverty Rate is 63%

Nigerians do not need glasses to see that in Nigeria approximately 10.2 million primary school-aged children and 8.1 million junior secondary school-aged children are out of school.

Nigerians do not need glasses to see roughly 1 in every 5 out-of-school children in the world lives in Nigeria.

Education is not a privilege. It is a foundation for national development.

Economic reform must have a human face. It must mean affordable food, cheaper transportation, accessible healthcare, decent jobs and renewed hope for the next generation.

Our young people should be selling their ideas, talents and innovation to the world and not their kidneys for ₦1.7 million just to survive at home.

NIGERIA’S POVERTY RATE: 2015–2026

Nigeria’s poverty crisis deserves more than political slogans—it demands accountability.

Under the PDP government in 2015, Nigeria’s poverty rate was estimated at about 33%. Since the APC came to power, poverty and economic hardship have worsened significantly.

The World Bank estimated that the share of Nigerians living below the national poverty line rose to 56% in 2023, and more recent estimates put it at 61% in 2024 and 63% in 2025. 2026 (Projected): 63% (expected to remain flat before potentially easing in subsequent years).

The central question is simple:

If economic reforms are working, when will ordinary Nigerians actually feel the benefits?

Economic growth, investment and improved government finances mean little if millions of Nigerians cannot afford food, housing, transportation, healthcare and education.

Government policies must have a human face.

Nigeria needs economic policies that put jobs, affordable food, purchasing power and the welfare of ordinary citizens at the heart of development—not policies that benefit only political elites and those already positioned to profit from the economy.

Nigerians deserve better. Nigerians deserve prosperity.

Tinubu’s Reforms Need a Human Face: Putting the Welfare of Poor Nigerians at the Heart of Change

Economic reforms should not be measured only by rising revenues, increased taxes, or improved government statistics. They must ultimately be judged by whether ordinary Nigerians can afford food, access healthcare, send their children to school, find decent jobs, and live with dignity.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has introduced significant economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and changes to the tax system. While reforms may be necessary to address Nigeria’s long-standing economic problems, the burden of adjustment cannot continue to fall disproportionately on the poor and vulnerable.

A reform that makes life unbearable for millions of citizens without providing adequate social protection risks losing the very people it is supposed to help.

Nigeria needs reforms with a human face—reforms that protect the poorest households, create opportunities for young people, strengthen healthcare and education, support small businesses, and ensure that government resources are used transparently and responsibly.

Economic growth means little to a family that cannot afford three meals a day.

A stronger naira means little to a parent who cannot pay school fees.

Higher government revenue means little to a struggling household if public services remain inaccessible.

The ultimate purpose of economic reform should be to improve the quality of life of Nigerians—not simply to improve government balance sheets.

Nigeria can reform its economy while protecting its people. What is needed is political will, accountability, transparency, and policies that put human welfare at the center of economic transformation.

Reform the economy.
Protect the vulnerable.
Create opportunities.
Reduce poverty.
Put Nigerians first.

"A President and the Endless Question of His Past

As a citizen of no other country, who has never sought foreign citizenship even when doing so became fashionable, my loyalty to Nigeria and my faith in her destiny remain unshaken.

Yesterday, 30th of August, being Sunday, I fervently prayed for our nation and for those entrusted with the solemn responsibility of leadership. I found myself deeply saddened by the direction in which our country is heading.

It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest.

Leadership, in my humble view, demands the courage and humility to confront one’s history — to acknowledge mistakes, provide candid explanations where questions arise, and, where necessary, apologise and seek forgiveness. True authority is strengthened, not diminished, when a leader accepts responsibility rather than seeks to shield uncomfortable aspects of the past from legitimate scrutiny.

This becomes particularly important when questions concern educational credentials. Issues surrounding foundational schooling — primary and secondary — should not remain unresolved or be addressed primarily through legal proceedings. Nigerians deserve clear, credible, and verifiable explanations, especially when such had been submitted in the past.

My deepest concern is the example this sets for more than 200 million Nigerians, particularly the over 30 million young people in schools. The nation’s highest office should exemplify integrity, accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership.

An imperfect past is part of the human condition. What matters is the willingness to confront it with humility, honesty and deep apology, to make amends where necessary and, when circumstances so demand, to place the interests of the nation above personal ambition.

When will our political class fully appreciate that individual ambitions are temporary, while the nation endures? The Presidency is an office held for a season; the moral standards established by those who occupy it can influence generations.

Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual.

A New Nigeria is POssible.
