Maigret - is the perfect mystery series for a rainy April evening!

Who would have thought that Mr. Bean can become such a great detective? Yes, we are talking about the actor Rowan Atkinson whose performance in the British television series Maigret can be described simply as nothing short of brilliant. We are used to being made to laugh by the comedian Atkinson, yet we are amused by his dramatic skills. Maigret has been around for more than 5 years now, yet it is not among the most popular TV mysteries. And this is absolutely unfair. Of course, for those of us who are fans of the genre, the character of Jules Maigret born by the imagination of the great Belgian writer Georges Simenon, is well-known. Yet, we have never imagined that no other but Rowan Atkinson can perform so well in this part. If you like chilling stories such as Jack The Reaper’s, then we encourage you to check out the mini-series Maigret. Two things we promise - you will witness the unbelievable talent of Atkinson as a commissaire placed to investigate gruesome murders of young women, and second - you will see the other side of Paris, where the streets can be dark and scary as the mind of a madman. Maigret’s stories are stories you need to see for yourself! And have you watched it already? Or maybe you have read the books? Comment below and let us know what you think :)

5 reasons why you should read mysteries

1. Improve your problem-solving skills.

Have you ever read a mystery so exciting that there comes a moment when you are thinking again and again about who might the killer be? This is probably the first effect a good mystery might have on you. We all become detectives ourselves. We will never forget the first time when we were reading “The ABC murders” or some of Chief Inspector Barnaby's Mysteries (now popular as The Midsomer Murders). The cases are so complicated and that is why they are such a great exercise for the mind. And there comes a moment when you say to yourself “I knew it! I knew that she was the killer!”. This is one of the greatest micro-victories of the mind.

2. Encourage your imagination and creativity.

In other words - dream! Did it ever happen to you to imagine yourself driving the iconic Oldsmobile Convertible such as Philip Marlowe’s? The detective is the most famous character created by the brilliant Raymond Chandler. And if you haven’t read “The Long Goodbye” yet, now is the time to do it.

It is the same emotion that makes so many people visit the Museum of Sherlock Holmes although we all know the character is complete fiction. Detective stories inspire us not only to dream but to be better people. Reading how someone stands against evil makes you want to become their follower, it makes you want to do great things yourself. We don’t know about you but we loved playing detectives when we were kids and the books were our inspiration.

3. Relax the mind.

Mysteries can be exciting and moving. But they can also help you relax. After a long day in the office, nothing can be as soothing for your mind as a good murder. Yes! We know how this sounds! And it is the absolute truth! Carol J. Perry is a celebrated author of the Witch City Mysteries series. Caught Dead Handed is the first book of the series. It tells the story of Lee Barrett who returns to her hometown Salem after her husband dies in a terrible accident. Barrett hopes to find peace and start all over again by finding a job at the local Witch TV. Instead of peace and quiet though she finds a dead body and even mysterious pieces and long-forgotten memories of her past begin to reveal. This book is one of the cozy mysteries that leave a mark in the mind and the heart of the reader forever. And we can assure you that it goes perfectly with a glass of nice rose wine and a cranberry-scented candle (we tried it!).

4. Learn more about other places.

Forget everything you know about Venice! Nobody can describe this magical city better than Paul Adam. Born by the imagination of the wonderful English novelist are two characters whose adventures take us to Italy. The book “The Rainaldi Quartet” tells the story of Gianny Castiglione and his friend Guastafeste. After their friend Tomaso Rainaldi is killed, the two friends are trying to find the missing link between the murderer and the crime - a priceless violin, that had been lost for many centuries. The investigation takes them to Venice and Venice is not at all what you expect. Paul Adam describes the atmosphere, the architecture, and the crowds of the city like no other. We are sure that you will love it.

5. Improve your literacy

Nowadays access to books is as easy as ever. Yet more and more people prefer gaming as their hobby. Although we can understand that tendency, we will never stop repeating how important reading is, especially for young people. Reading can help them improve their literacy and expand their vocabulary. If you have read Agatha Christie’s classics then you know that Hercule Poirot (he is just such a brilliant character that we can’t stop quoting him) always reminds Captain Hastings and Miss Lemon how important using “the little gray cells” is. “It is the brain, the little gray cells on which one must rely. One must seek the truth within - not without”, Poirot says.

The Perfect Poirot

Until this day we cannot imagine an actor who can perform better in the character of Hercule Poirot than David Suchet. The sharp eye, the witty smile, the unforgettable French accent, the method, the impeccable suit, and of course the legendary mustache, everything, even the way Suchet holds the cane, are so typical of the character of Poirot that sometimes it can be hard for us to imagine that this man isn’t real. The way he wears his hat and the way he looks at his pocket watch, the way he smiles and the way he always knows what to say are so authentic that it leaves unexpected feelings of admiration and adoration to everyone who ever was watching Suchet’s brilliant performance. We honestly believe that The TV show Agatha Christie’s Poirot is one of the greatest TV mystery dramas of all time. If you are excited to watch something that has the sweet taste of the old times, when people really knew how to dress up and manners were incredibly important, this is the right TV show for you. This actually made us wonder why do we love the character of Hercule Poirot so much? He is so different than everything we imagine as a contemporary detective. He does not curse, he always listens and thinks first, he never fights and he denies violence more than ever. He adores the peace and culture of London, good food, and great spirits. He respects equally the noble men and women and the servants. And more importantly, his honest heart wishes nothing more but to see people happy and for this is ready to bring justice to everyone who is in his way. And have you already watched Agatha Christie’s Poirot? Comment below and tell us what you think.
