Today In Midwest History... October 8, 1871, A bad day for fires. The great Chicago fire covered over four square miles, claimed 250 lives, destroyed more than 17,450 buildings, and caused $196 million damage. In Peshtigo, Wisconsin, a forest fire claimed an estimated 1,500 lives and scorched 1.28 million acres of pristine timberland. And, on the same day in Michigan, fires began along the western shoreline and, fanned by high winds, quickly swept across the state all the way to Lake Huron. Holland and most of Manistee were destroyed; college students struggled heroically to save Lansing; and in the Thumb area, ninety percent of the homes were destroyed.
