Poetic Wax FensePost originally launched on June 6, 2006 out of a small house on the hill in Pullman, WA. The blog has undergone a near decade-long hiatus.

Welcome to Poetic Wax, a series where Andy digs into the record collection he started in the 1990s to uncover the stories behind the bands, albums, and songs within. Fast forward to today: thousands of reviews and features live on the site, and FensePost has seen dozens of one-time and regular authors alike write guest posts. But it returned with a vengeance in late 2021 as a Vinyl Music Blog. FensePost is owned and operated by Andy Fenstermaker. Andy is a music lover, writer, marketing professional, and entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to sharing his passion for music with others. He is the founder of FensePost, a renowned music blog that has been sharing the latest and greatest in indie music since 2006. Andy has always been fascinated by the power of music to connect people, and he started FensePost with the aim of sharing his love of music with others. All posts these days cover items in his collection, and Andy is the photographer of all vinyl pictures included on this blog.

In 1964, The Beatles set out on their first American tour at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, hitting tour stops across the United States (including in the south). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 had just been signed into law by President Johnson that July, and the American South was actively flouting it. This is the story of that tour, a one-line clause in The Beatles rider, a moral stand that Paul McCartney called "just common sense," and the famous Gator Bowl stop in Jacksonville, FL.

David Bowie spent the summer of 2001 recording Heathen on a mountaintop in Shokan, New York, then finished the overdubs in Manhattan as the city was still reeling from September 11. It's time to look at the album's cover art taken by photographer Markus Klinko, its design by Jonathan Barnbrook, both built the look around a sense of disillusionment. The closing track, "Heathen (The Rays)," was written before the attacks, which is why some listeners have read it as prophecy. It's time to dig into part of the story behind Heathen.

For Jack White and The White Stripes, everything was falling apart after the whirlwind success of Elephant in 2004. After sweeping the Grammys, they set out to record their follow up, transforming their Detroit home into a studio. Fights, legal battles, a house that seemed to be out to get them. Nothing seemed to be working. And then Jack White crafted the "Blue Orchid" riff, and everything changed. This is the story of how "Blue Orchid" saved The White Stripes' 2005 album Get Behind Me Satan.

After Cryptograms, Deerhunter sought to reinvent themselves with an album of short, poppy tunes aimed at a more accessible audience. Then they went and ruined it with "Nothing Ever Happened," a lengthy hook-filled track that devolved into an extended jam upon first recording. On an album mostly containing 2-3 minute tracks, "Nothing Ever Happened" neared 6 in its final studio form, but could hit 12-20 minutes live.

On November 15, 1993, slowcore band Codeine seemed broken. They'd lost their drummer. The sessions for their second album had been scrapped. They seemed directionless. But they also landed an opening slot for Mazzy Star. And at Lounge Ax in Chicago, someone hit Record on the soundboard and captured the entire set. 20 years later, Numero Group would release that show as "What About The Lonely?" and we'd see that at the time they weren't quite broken yet.

In 2016, hazy Brooklyn psychedelic rock duo Psychic Ills released Inner Journey Out, their fifth album. Tucked in this droning masterpiece is a country-tinged track called "I Don't Mind." It was the first single from the album and it included a surprise guest by Mazzy Star lead singer Hope Sandoval. This is the story of the album, how they landed the guest spot by Hope, and the tragedy that struck the band just a few years later.
