Here's a powerful poem by our editor, James Barrett Rodehaver, that we think speaks for itself. Enjoy!
tease.
they're pulling her hair, mama,
they're laughing about it.
"they do that if they like you, sweetie."
uh huh and what do they do if they don't?
when she pulls back?
when she says stop?
when no isn't working?
we teach little girls that it's natural
for love to go hand in hand with abuse,
and that the boys will only get in trouble if they take it too far.
don't give them too many inches, mama.
cause they'll drag her for miles.
susie kay, when you get older,
when the boys pick on you,
i want you to find a sharp rock that screams no into their faces.
i want their blood mixed with "well, maybe she likes you,"
while at the same time knowing the opposite is evident.
i hope they find their legs underneath them before your daddy comes.
and if i'm there, little dove,
i'll be ready holding any ammo you might need,
so you can teach them from day one
that the first no always means stop.
