Tiny baby, 6 month old Beanie Bear 😍😭
This is where my hippie journey began.
New moms are told that babies cannot wear sunscreen until they are 6 months old. Once beanie was old enough I bought aveeno baby sunscreen. I assumed it was better quality than most because it wasn’t the ”cheap stuff.”
I found myself reluctant to use it on him. I kept wondering, why is it safe for him to use this product now, but it wasn’t safe 2 weeks or 2 months ago??
At that point I began reading and researching. What I found was eye opening. I’ll share a bit here about common ingredients.
- Oxybenzone and octinoxate are known hormone disrupters and lead to cell damage and cancer
- retinyl palmitate is known to cause problems related to human reproduction
- phthalates are chemicals that are found in many products and are not currently regulated in the US, these chemicals are linked to a laundry list of ailments and conditions
- parabens are a type of preservative that is linked to breast cancer. In one study 99% of the breast cancer tissue samples tested positive for parabens
- synthetic fragrances are made of chemicals that are directly linked to cancer, birth defects, nervous system disorders and allergies.
Your skin is your largest organ and things that are absorbed through your skin have direct access to your blood stream.
Each of the ingredients listed above will eventually get their own post that goes into detail about their uses and potential hazards.
Until then… the good news is that as people are becoming educated and working to avoid chemicals and toxins more and more chemical free options become available.
Our current favorites, which can he found on Amazon 🙌 are babo botanicals and badger
