KCPD OFFICER SUFFERS SERIOUS INJURIES

Kansas City police say there were serious injuries for a police officer and the driver of a Kia in an incident that occurred shortly after midnight.

Police say preliminary investigation revealed that a Shoal Creek Patrol Division officer was sitting inside a blue Dodge Durango police vehicle assisting a DUI officer on a traffic stop. The police vehicle was parked on the left shoulder of the I-29 northbound bridge over Waukomis with its red and blue emergency lights activated. A blue Kia Forte was traveling northbound on I-29 at a high rate of speed.

The Kia struck the rear end of the parked patrol vehicle. The officer and the driver of the Kia were both transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The officer is currently in stable condition, and the driver of the Kia is currently in serious condition.

Police say the investigation, to include suspected impairment of the Kia driver, is ongoing.

PURSUIT ENDS IN CRASH OF SUSPECT'S VEHICLE

Today (Friday, Oct. 10) at approximately 8:10 a.m., the Platte County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible intoxicated driver traveling in a stolen vehicle southbound on Hwy. 45. At approximately 8:20 a.m., Platte County deputies located the suspect vehicle, and attempted to initiate a vehicle stop on the suspect vehicle (2006 Silver Dodge Ram truck). When the suspect vehicle failed to stop for the deputy, a pursuit was initiated.

The suspect vehicle continued to flee from the deputy as they traveled southbound on Hwy. 45 and then continued southeast on Hwy. 273. The suspect vehicle avoided a tire deflation device (stop sticks) that had been deployed on Hwy. 273 and then continued onto I-29 where the suspect vehicle went southbound on I-29 from Platte City. The pursuit of the suspect vehicle continued southbound on I-29 until a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) initiated a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) maneuver to end the pursuit on southbound I-29 near 64th Street. The suspect vehicle crashed, ending the pursuit and one 18-year-old male subject was taken into custody at the scene.

No officers were injured in the pursuit. The suspect was transported to an area hospital for medical clearance before being transported to the Platte County Detention Center, where he will be placed on a 24-hour investigative hold while criminal charges are pursued.

Agencies involved in the pursuit and subsequent arrest included the Weston Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, and the Riverside Police Department.

“I appreciate the cooperation of all the agencies involved today in safely ending the pursuit and the arrest of the suspect," said Erik Holland, sheriff of Platte County

BACK IN TOWN

It's usually a Landmark On the Road feature but this one is more like a Landmark In Town. Dooley Ann George Navarro, daughter of Sandra George and the late Dooley George, former longtime residents of Platte City, was in town over the past weekend for her high school class’s 50-year reunion. The event coincided with Platte County R-3’s Spirit Week, including last Friday’s homecoming parade. Dooley’s daughter, Clara, traveled with her mother from their home in Austin, Tex., to witness the pageantry of Friday’s mile long parade and took time to read the Platte County Landmark Newspaper.

A semi-tanker overturned on Interstate 29 just north of Hwy. 92 this morning around 7 a.m. The truck was headed north on I-29 and ran off the left side of the road, overturning into the median. The type of material being hauled was not immediately known. Troopers said the driver suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. No hazardous materials spilled out as a result of the crash, and another truck was used to transfer the contents from the overturned truck, according to highway patrol reports. I-29 lane closures caused traffic to be diverted through Platte City. The tanker was still in the median when this photo was taken about noon today.

UPDATE: The Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report indicates the driver was a 62-year-old male of Topeka, Kan. He was transported to North Kansas City Hospital with serious injuries.
