Nathaniel accepts a job from the wealthiest business tycoon in Avast City–Dominic Ramesses. While working for Ramesses, Nathaniel learns the haze's long-kept secret: it’s composed of the spirits of Melkai, demons sealed away a millennium ago. These spirits possess and alter machine hosts, from household appliances to tanks. Through this possession, Nathaniel’s forge warns him that Dominic is creating machine-vessels to conquer the world.
Nathaniel joins forces with Dominic’s secretary, Elaine, a young woman who has seen the worst of the city's corruption. She rallies a team of union workers and Melkai to fight against her boss. However, with the city council under Dominic’s thumb, his “revolution” is all but assured.
