June is Audiobook Appreciation Month, and there is much to celebrate when it comes to discussing this format of reading. According to the Association of American Publishers, digital audio revenues increased by 71.1% between 2018-2022. Additionally, in February of 2023, audiobook revenues for adult literature surpassed Ebook revenues for the first time in their records. Many people have begun relying on audiobooks to enjoy stories, and there are many reasons as to why:

⭐️Audiobooks Help reduce negative thinking. For those who struggle to silence the hurtful voices in their heads, it can be a relief to have a kinder voice in your mind.
⭐️Audiobooks Relax our eyes. Reading a physical book or an Ebook is incredibly stressful on the eyes, so let your eyes take a break and try listening to your next read.
⭐️Allow us to multi-task! Grab your headphones, select a book, and head to the gym, go on a walk, or do some household chores while being immersed in a story.
⭐️Help us to better comprehend. To fully digest an audiobook you must pay close attention, which will strengthen your literacy skills.

To listen to an audiobook is to be completely immersed in the words of a story, so do yourself a favor and download an audiobook today.

As we all know, the threat of artificial intelligence is looming on our horizons. While there are many instances in which AI can be a helpful resource, it also exists as a danger to many around the globe, including writers, agents, designers, publishers, etc. There are now AI machines that are being “trained” to digest pieces of literature, break them down, and reconstruct them into new stories. This is incredibly troubling to those within our industry and the Authors Guild, an organization that supports authors and their ability to sustain themselves through their work, recently met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. about their concerns. They voiced their support of these AI programs, but requested that members of Congress educate themselves on the potential destruction these programs could have on creative industries, and urged for laws to be implemented that will protect authors and their works from these AI generative programs.

Guild CEO, Mary Rasenberger declares that Congress seems supportive of their movement, and hopes that compensations and protective measures will be implemented soon.

In late May Amanda Gorman’s book, The Hill We Climb, was removed from school libraries in Miami-Dade, Florida. In 2021, Gorman read from this publication at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, and her words have served as inspiration for children across the country. However, now those words are being threatened by the book bans that are sweeping our nation. Gorman believes that to remove her novel, and all of the others that are being removed from school libraries, is to “[Rob] children of the chance to find their voices in literature [and this] is a violation of their right to free thought and speech.

To bring awareness to this perilous situation plaguing our nation Gorman has joined forces with her publisher, Penguin Random House, and PEN America in their fight for the freedom to read.

Last month the Pulitzer Prizes, which honor achievements in journalism, literature, and musical composition, were awarded to outstanding creatives within these industries. Most notably are the winners of the Fiction Pulitzer, Barbara Kingsolver (Demon Copperhead) and Hernan Diaz (Trust), as this is the first time in the Pulitzer’s 105 year history that two authors have received a Prize for the same category. There have been eleven years in which no author received the Fiction Pulitzer Prize, so to have two authors awarded this highest level of acclaim is outstanding.

Today is the first day of Pride month, and now more than ever we must protect our LGBTQ+ authors and stories. In the midst of the troubling book bans sweeping our nation, PEN America and Penguin Random House have sued school leaders in Escambia County, Florida due to their prejudiced and harmful attempts to ban LGBTQ+ and race related books.

As of right now 197 books within Escambia County schools have been targeted for removal with roughly 42% of those being authored by non white / LGBTQ+ identifying people. Additionally, about 59% of these restricted books contain LGBTQ+ themes.

Books have the power to shape and educate us, and therefore all books must be protected as they offer wisdom, guidance, and act as a beacon of hope and solace for many.

Books are important tools that can offer knowledge and support on how to better understand ourselves and our brains. Today is the last day of Mental Health Awareness Month, but that does not mean that tomorrow your mental health should become less of a priority. Instead, continue working through your troubles and traumas, and lean on the resources offered in literature. We have compiled a variety of books, from self help to memoirs and poetry collections, that can serve as a light for anyone struggling with their mental health.

Last week the Ukrainian author, Volodymyr Vakulenko, was posthumously awarded the 2023 IPA Prix Voltaire Special Award. This award honors publishers and authors who write about their beliefs in spite of government threats and intimidation. Vakulenko lived in the Kharkiv area of Ukraine, which is a Russian occupied village, and although he displayed activism against the Russian invasion that was ravaging his country, he mainly resisted the occupation with his words. He wrote and fought for the freedom of his country, and dedicated much of his writings to children’s books, histories of his region and poetry.

He and his son were arrested in March of 2022, but were beaten and then released. However, in September of 2022 he was arrested once again but was never returned. Months later, his body was identified in a mass grave with 447 other murdered people.

During the final months of Vakulenko’s life he kept a diary about the realities of living under Russian occupation and told his father to give his writings to the Ukrainian people once they were freed. That diary was found buried under a cherry tree in Vakulenko’s backyard.

Vakulenko was honored with this award because of his bravery and dedication to the Ukrainian people and to exposing the true realities this war is inflicting on the men, women, and children of Ukraine.

The future of AI is bright. Chat GPT surpassed 100,000,000 users in February. However AI’s popularity has been troubling to authors and journalists. AI can do their jobs in seconds. But don’t worry AI won’t replace authors.
