One Warrior’s Creed
If today is to be THE DAY, so be it. If you seek to do battle with me this day you will receive the best that I am capable of giving. It may not be enough, but it will be everything that I have to give
and it will be impressive for I have constantly prepared myself for this day. I have trained, drilled and rehearsed my actions so that I might have the best chance of defeating you. I have kept myself in peak physical condition, schooled myself in the martial skills
and have become proficient in the application of combat tactics. You may defeat me, but you will pay a severe price and will be lucky to escape with your life. I do not fear Death, for I have been close enough to it on enough occasions that it no longer concerns me. But I do fear the loss of my Honor and would rather die fighting than to have it said that I was without Courage. So I WILL FIGHT YOU, no matter how insurmountable it may seem, and to the death if need be,
in order that it may never be said of me that I was not a Warrior.

Steve Tarani is a master of his trade. Nothing else need be said.

There are many factors that go into accurate shooting, and all of them are interdependent. Steve Tarani refers to it as a control matrix, where every layer is connected to the others: mental, visual and mechanical.

HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY to my brothers and sisters-in-arms. On my Dad's side, my Great-Grandfather fought in the Civil War, my Grandfather fought in WWI, and my Dad in WWII. On my Mom's side, my Grandfather immigrated to the U.S. in 1911 from Afghanistan, a first-generation immigrant. All of his son's, my Mom's brothers, second-generation immigrants, served in WWII, or Korea, and one served in both Korea and Vietnam. My uncle Ahzez jumped in with the 82nd Airborne on D-Day and fought through to the end, and my uncle Hamid jumped in with the 101st on D-Day and fought through to the end. Both were highly decorated. Several of my cousins on my Mom's side fought in Vietnam or some of the later short wars, and one, my cousin Dawn, served a combat tour in Iraq (I got a chance to go see her on Victory Base). My son, CW4 Jordan Watt, an Apache pilot, served a combat tour in Afghanistan. HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY also to the Warriors of the Watt clan!

Good read. This counts for law enforcement officers as well.
“The morality of a peaceful society, charity, kindness, emotional sensitivity, is good. But it cannot stop a man with a machete. It cannot stop a mob. It cannot stop committed evil. Warriors can.”

On Veterans Day, we honor the warriors who faced evil at arm’s length.

The importance of the handheld flashlight over the weapon-mounted light (WML).

This morning I was rudely awakened by a loud crash somewhere in the house. I grabbed a handheld flashlight and my G***k 19L with a WML already attached.

The #1 best method of seeing through darkness in your own home is turning on the overhead lights, but sometimes that means moving through darkness to a light switch.

As I moved toward the hall and hallway light switch I searched first down the hall with the handheld and the light landed on a pair of legs.

I recognized them immediately as my oldest son’s. He had been awakened by the same noise and also came to investigate.

By searching first with a handheld and not with the WML I was able to completely avoid pointing a firearm anywhere in his general vicinity.

I conducted the search of my home without ever turning on the WML, using instead my household lights and, where appropriate, the handheld flashlight.

A WML can be a valuable tool in many contexts, but when guns have lights attached to them, the temptation can be strong to treat a firearm like a flashlight rather than a firearm.

While there are safer ways to use WML in searching, you’re far better off using handhelds or overhead lights to mitigate the risk of mishandling a firearm and pointing it at something you wouldn’t want to shoot—especially if you’re also foggy from being pulled out of sleep.

I never did figure out what made the noise, but to quote my son (after he playfully mocked me at breakfast for my sleepy household search), it was nice knowing everyone in the house was safe and protected… especially from me and my own response by using the correct tool and technique for the job.

On Dec. 18, 1965, then-1stLt. Harvey Barnum was serving as an artillery forward observer with Company H, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines in Vietnam. The company suddenly became pinned down by a hail of accurate enemy fire and separated from the remainder of the battalion by over 500 meters of open and fire-swept ground. Casualties mounted rapidly. Barnum quickly made a hazardous reconnaissance of the area, seeking targets for his artillery.

Finding the rifle company commander mortally wounded and the radio operator killed, he, with complete disregard for his own safety, gave aid to the dying commander, then removed the radio from the dead operator and strapped it to himself. He immediately assumed command of the rifle company, and moving at once into the midst of heavy fire, rallying and giving encouragement to all units, reorganized them to replace the loss of key personnel and led their attack on enemy positions from which deadly fire continued to come.

His sound and swift decisions and his obvious calm served to stabilize the badly decimated units, and his gallant example as he stood repeatedly exposed to point out targets served as an inspiration to all. Provided with two armed helicopters, he moved fearlessly through enemy fire to control the air attack against the firmly entrenched enemy while skillfully directing one platoon in a successful counterattack in the key enemy positions. Having thus cleared a small area, he requested and directed the landing of two transport helicopters for the evacuation of the dead and wounded. He then assisted in the mopping up and final seizure of the battalion’s objective.

For his gallant initiative and heroic conduct, Barnum received the Medal of Honor. After 27 years of service, he retired as a Colonel.
