On September 5, tribal nations gathered at the Spokane Plains Battlefield Monument to honor and remember the battles of 1858: Steptoe, Four Lakes, and Spokane Plains. These conflicts were fought between U.S. Army forces and the Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Yakama, Palus, Colville, and Kalispel peoples. They remain pivotal moments in the history of the region and of tribal resistance.

The commemoration recognized the ancestors who defended their homelands and the descendants who continue to live on this land since time immemorial. Leaders emphasized that the purpose of the event was to tell the true history of these battles and to honor the resilience of the tribes.

It honored those who gave their lives, acknowledged the injustices of the past, and celebrated the survival and strength of the Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Yakama, Palus, Colville, and Kalispel peoples. By gathering at the battlefield, tribal nations carried forward their ancestors’ stories and ensured that the true history of 1858 continues to be remembered.
