Spotlight: Coeur d’Alene Tribal member Joe Brown has received a $5,000 scholarship from the Kurt Grinnell Aquaculture Scholarship Foundation (KGASF) to further his education in fisheries and wildlife, marking a major step in his career transition and his commitment to his Tribe’s natural-resource future. The foundation awarded a total of $25,000 across seven Indigenous students for the 2025–2026 academic year.

After spending more than a decade working in the construction industry, Joe decided to follow his passion: contributing to his Tribe’s and region’s fisheries and wildlife programs. He is now enrolled at Spokane Community College, pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Science.

“To be a Coeur d’Alene Tribal member pursuing this path is something I don’t take lightly. I’m committed to this work for my family, for our lake and lands, and for the future of our people.”– Joe Brown

The KGASF scholarship supports Tribal and First Nation students who are pursuing careers in aquaculture, fisheries, or natural-resource management. The foundation notes that recipients are not only academically motivated but also committed to serving their communities and advancing Indigenous food-security and sovereignty initiatives.

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe congratulates Joe on this achievement and extend thanks to the Kurt Grinnell Aquaculture Scholarship Foundation for their ongoing support of Tribal students and natural-resource education. Joe’s success represents the power of perseverance and the value of turning a lifelong dream toward meaningful contribution.

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe recognizes Council Member and Natural Resources Director Caj Matheson for his leadership in protecting the health and future of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

At the recent Northwest Environmental Business Council symposium, Caj spoke alongside regional and federal experts about the challenges facing the lake, including historic mine waste on the lakebed and emerging nutrient issues throughout the watershed. He highlighted the importance of long-term planning, strong partnerships, and the Tribe’s continued commitment to safeguarding the lake for the region.

Caj emphasized that while visitors see a beautiful and active lake, there is still important work to be done beneath the surface. He also called for collaborative solutions and consistent investment, reminding attendees that protecting the lake will require community-wide participation.

We appreciate Caj’s ongoing work, his representation of the Tribe, and his dedication to ensuring that Lake Coeur d’Alene remains protected.

“What if this is as good as it gets for Coeur d’Alene Lake?” Derek Forseth asked as he introduced the panel at the Environmental Symposium, hosted by the Northwest Environmental Business Council Nov. 6, 2025. The panel session, "A Case Study: The Health and Future of Lake Coeur d’Alene," pre...

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe came together this Veterans Day to honor and thank those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The day was filled with reflection, gratitude, and community as Tribal members, students, and local organizations gathered to recognize the sacrifices made by Tribal and non-Tribal veterans alike.

A ceremony was held at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Monument, “Honoring Our Fallen Comrades” and “Honor the Dead,” where several veterans were recognized for their service, including Ernie Stensgar, John Abraham, Deb Louie, Debbie Louie-McGee, Lori DeLorme, and Joseph Chapman.

Chairman Chief Allan shared words of appreciation and respect for the veterans in attendance and across the community.

“Our veterans are heroes,” said Allan. “They stood up for something greater than themselves — for our people, our families, and our way of life. We owe them our deepest respect and gratitude, not only today but every day.”

The Plummer-Worley School District also hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day assembly, bringing students, staff, and community members together to honor those who served. Students shared personal messages, poems, and reflections, showing courage and pride as they spoke in front of their school to thank the men and women who have defended this nation.

The Tribe also extends its appreciation to the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort Hotel for their continued support of local veterans and community events.

Special recognition was given to Rose Creek for leading an honor song during the ceremony. Their voices and drums carried through the crowd, honoring veterans and dancers with a song of remembrance and strength that echoed the Tribe’s deep respect for those who have served.

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe expresses its sincere gratitude to every veteran, past and present, for their bravery, dedication, and sacrifices. Their courage continues to inspire and remind us all of the importance of service, honor, and community.

Marimn Health Wrestling has officially kicked off its 2025 season, and it hasn’t disappointed. Practices are packed with energy, drawing more than 30 young athletes eager to wrestle, train, and represent their community on the mat.

This year’s program features wrestlers across multiple age divisions, including 6U, 8U, 10U, and 12U, with many Coeur d'Alene Tribal youth already making their presence known early in the season.

The team has hit the ground running, competing in recent tournaments at Bonners Ferry and Lake City High School. From the first whistle, the kids showed that same determination and heart that continues to grow in Tribal youth athletics.

If you have videos we'd love to see them!
