The Native Wellness Institute recently hosted a powerful Wellness Warrior Camp for Native youth, drawing participants from tribes across the country. The camp was held on the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Reservation along the Oregon Coast. Representing the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Coeur d' Alene Tribe Natural Resources sent three of their summer interns, Isabella Kee, Areianna Lowley, and Joycelyn Arroyo to take part in this experience. The camp focused on traditional teachings, healing practices, games, food and building a foundation for a life rooted in wellness.
Throughout the week, our interns learned valuable tools for personal growth, cultural empowerment, and community healing. They are excited to share the knowledge and practices they gained with our community, helping to strengthen wellness on our own reservation.
Here is what interns had to say:
“One of my favorite parts of camp was playing traditional games like Double ball, Archery tag, and Stickgame. Learning the history behind the games made it even more fun. It was a reminder that wellness can be joyful and rooted in culture.” - Joycelyn Arroyo
“It was an amazing experience for me especially getting to try traditional foods like Elk, Bison, Salmon, Juneberries, and Huckleberries. We ate these foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it just felt so powerful to eat the same foods our ancestors did. It made me feel more connected to who I am.” -Isabella Kee
