Back in 1979 — or thereabouts — I was working for FEDCO Audio, a 24-track remote recording truck with an API board. FEDCO had been hired to record two shows for Joan Armatrading’s live album Steppin’ Out, which came out the following year. The first show was in Hamilton, Ontario, and the second in Toronto. Glyn Johns was producing.
There was supposed to be a third date, but FEDCO couldn’t commit to it. If I recall correctly, Glyn ended up using the RCA remote truck, which had a Neve console. I remember him asking specifically what board the RCA truck had — and when he heard it was a Neve, he let out a very loud, very British “F*!**” Apparently, he wasn’t a fan of Neve boards at the time. Maybe his tastes have changed since then.
I never actually knew which shows made it onto the final release, but for me, it was an incredible experience.

Anyway, Tom told me that Glyn had passed away a few years earlier. Turns out, that wasn’t true — good to know he’s still around and working.
In this episode I finally have a a chance to sit down with legendary engineer and producer Glyn Johns. Johns had a heavy hand in some of rock's most classic ...
