All Things Great and Small ...

The troubled times began in my hometown about a year ago. The tension was always there, simmering beneath the surface. The demographics began to change in this rural community about 25 years ago. That's when the commuter rail arrived. Then came Wal-Mart and Stop & Shop. Young families began to move in. Halifax, a town in Massachusetts that most people couldn't find on a map, was suddenly split between older conservatives and younger liberals.

There was mostly peaceful co-existence until last year. That's when someone working at the Recycling Center began flying a Back The Blue Flag at the facility. Someone apparently called Town Hall and explained that the flag violated the U.S. Flag Code because it altered the basic design of the Stars and Stripes. After conferring with town counsel the flag was removed from taxpayer-owned property. It should have ended right there.

But it didn't. A Republicans candidate for state representative saw political opportunity. She organized a "Back The Blue" rally in the center of town and told the crowd she would champion their cause. If she had done an ounce of research she would have known the Back The Blue flag violated the flag code and the decision to remove it from the Recycling Center had nothing to do with politics. The Back The Blue flag is disrespectful to the actual flag of the United States of America because it attempts to co-opt patriotism to promote a chosen profession. That isn't what the Stars and Stripes is supposed to represent.

It didn't end there, either. The Republican candidate's campaign sent out postcards to thousands of local residents. The cards featured the Back The Blue flag and accused her opponent of trying to destroy the police department with her "socialistic" agenda. Her opponent has been married for years to a police officer who worked in New York on 9/11. Thankfully her Democratic opponent won re-election by a comfortable margin, but this Republican divider still sits on the local school committee.

The vile rhetoric continued on social media. A former resident and fervent Trump supporter took over as administrator for what was once a normal town page and turned it into QAnon Central. Anyone who challenged the political rhetoric too strongly was deleted from the page. Not wanting their rhetoric challenged on the actual town page, they bombarded Facebook with complaints, claiming the real town page was promoting hate speech. They were actually able to get that page shut down while people in town were debating the school committee's decision to remove inclusion flags from classrooms at the local elementary schools.

The School Committee, in violation of Open Meeting Law, secretly voted to permanently remove inclusion flags from the school after a handful of parents claimed the flags "politically marginalized" their children. The School Committee actually said in a prepared statement that the flag was banned because it made some children feel unsafe. Yes, a flag representing inclusion for everyone made some kids feel unsafe. The irony of that is absolutely stunning.

The backlash to all this has been heartwarming. Local liberals now have their own page. There is a slew of people stepping forward to run against the divisive forces in this town. Inclusion flags are popping up in windows everywhere. The fight for the soul of this community is now underway.

It is very important to engage in national politics. It is equally important to make sure the fight starts at home. That's where the seeds of hatred and division often grow.
