Shell Study
I found this Welk shell at the beach in Kitty Hawk a few years ago and carry it around as my model. This is the fourth shell I've carried around with me, the others have been reclaimed by the ocean.
This photo was taken in a puddle at Avalon fishing pier parking lot. Years ago, I was teaching a Photo Workshop at the same location. To get the reflection of the shell, the camera has to be down next to the water, and the woman I was teaching was down on the pavement trying to frame the image. There were two guys that were working across the street and saw this and came running over asking us if we need an ambulance. Imagine our chagrin, when we said no we're just taking photographs.

Twirling Around the Lily
Multiple exposure of a pink water lily in my backyard pond. This photo was taken with 20 images as I circled the water lily. I combined them all together using Photoshop layers with different opacities and blend modes. This technique was made popular by a photographer named Pep Ventosa. He mostly photographed trees with this technique. I thought it may lend itself to close up flowers. This is my first attempt at photographing close up flowers using this technique.

I'm thrilled to share that my photo was selected for the cover of the June issue of Our State Magazine! I also have three other photos featured inside this issue. My wife and I discovered the magazine on the shelf while we were in the grocery store. As we stood in line to purchase it, my wife excitedly told the lady behind us that I had taken the cover shot. The woman was so happy for us that she offered to buy the magazine as a gift. Although we graciously declined, we were deeply touched by the kindness of a complete stranger.

Beach Swirl
Using my wide-angle lens and tilting the camera up to include mostly sky I swung the camera down the beach keeping the horison level during the 1/10 of a second exposure. This camera technique is known as ICM photography or intentional camera movement photography. Distortion from tilting the 16 mm wide angle lens up created this circular affect. This photo was taken in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in the Outer Banks of NC.

Serenity at Sandy Bay
Where the sun sets over a tranquil coastal landscape, painting the sky with color that is mirrored in the calm waters below. A slice of natural beauty on Hatteras Island, North Carolina.
Sandy Bay is usually busy with windsurfers and kite borders, but on this calm evening, my wife and I were the only ones there to view this exceptional sunset.

Gift From the Sea
I was walking along this deserted beach in Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks before sunrise and found this piece of a Whelk shell. I saw this photo in my head and I was lucky enough to capture it. I set my camera up on a tripod, with the feet spread wide for a stable platform, and using a wide angle lens composed this shot. It was a lot of trial and error. A few waves were too strong and I had to dance out of the sea foam to try to keep my shoes dry and not have my camera wash away. After about ten minutes of this, a wave came up from behind me and the camera, and resigned to having wet shoes I was able to get this photo. I was amazed when I got home to see the wake around this shell.

Over the years we have found many interesting things on the beach but part of a door with a handle and lock is a first. Anyone have any guesses as to the age and also if it came off of a ship or a house that the sea has claimed?
Thanks!
