I've been waiting to explore Bois Blanc island since my last visit to Beaver island.

Not a single paved road & a ton of two track trails kept lightly travelled by the locals, who keep a steady population of 100 throughout the year.

At 33 hours of no sleep, the clock is still ticking as I finally arrive at the coordinates of campsite A with the bike & all my gear.

The landscape was more than perfect for the week ahead, strategically chosen on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Superior & tucked below the peninsula's bay, letting the rolling winds keep their momentum overshooting basecamp.

By now, I'm far into the red zone. Exhausted, caloric reserves empty, and the temperature has reached its nightly low of 38°F deep within cougar country. Complacency is a liability.

You don't get the luxury of sleep until the area is secured. That means scavenging dry wood by headlamp, establishing a fire for thermal regulation & predator deterrent, then finally prepping food provisions.

The mission isn't complete when you reach the site, it’s complete when the perimeter is set, your belly is full, and the hammock is hung for a good night's rest.

Exploration isn't always about the views, photos, or memories. Sometimes, it’s about proving to yourself what you are capable of. Pushing the limits of you & your gear just beyond the line of no return.

Approaching 23 hours of no sleep. I still had 10 long hours on the road to reach the trailhead where the experience really begins.

The hype is a double-edged sword as it keeps your eyes open, but it makes you anxious, racing against daylight, hoping to secure campsite option A & wondering if it will be everything I had planned. I reached the drop zone as the sun & warm air started to bleed out, letting the cold sink in.

By 10:00 pm, the forest turned to darkness & the paved road washed out into mud mixed gravel with miles left to go before the terrain became a real challenge.

I've built my Himalayan to be an unstoppable tank, but these trees didn't care. As I neared campsite A, I had to strip the bike down, carrying each of my heavy luggage panniers one by one through the dark narrowing deer trail before reaching the pre-planned site.

The bike was through, but still had hours ahead before I could sleep.

0 hours of sleep with 36 hours of up-time. Thats my new record.

Your body needs 6–9 hours of rest every day. After 24 hours of no sleep, Judgment is impaired & reaction times mirror a 0.10% blood alcohol level. At 36 hours, the body enters a state of high-stress, survival instincts spike, and reality is blurred.

The Mission? 7 days, off-grid, solo with zero support & no backup in sight.

I spent the night before starting the trip analyzing my pack, fighting off the loud doubts in my head. When you're going off-grid for a week with no backup, a plan that's 'good enough' doesn't exist.

Checking every seal, greasing every connection on the bike, and going over my satellite images of this remote region to ensure I had an option B, just in case option A became a bust. The sat-images showed a path, but the ground data drew a swamp. Pockets of deep water everywhere on unmaintained paths, but you really can't confirm your research as 'true' until you arrive on the trailhead.

But first, I had a 10-hour commute, just getting to the start line.
