A young red-bellied woodpecker stopped by for a snack today. While they're famous for drilling into trees in search of insects, they also eat nuts, berries, seeds, and fruit. Oranges are a favorite treat at many backyard feeding stations, especially during warmer months.

A quick look at the garden today! The sun melon has hit a growth spurt, and the birdhouse gourds are putting on size too. It's always exciting when the vines switch from settling in to taking off.

Most caladiums are grown for their striking foliage, so their flowers often go unnoticed. This bloom consists of a spathe surrounding a spadix, which holds many tiny flowers. Whether your caladium is a 'White Christmas' variety or another cultivar, the flower is a fascinating part of the plant that many gardeners never see.

Garden verbena is one of those plants that earns its place in the garden. The bright flower clusters provide nectar for butterflies and bees, and many varieties bloom for months with very little fuss. Have you ever grown verbena?

A busy morning on the spiderwort! This flower attracted both a bumblebee and a honeybee today. While they look similar at a glance, bumblebees are usually larger and much fuzzier, while honeybees have a slimmer build. Both are important pollinators that help plants produce seeds, fruits, and vegetables.

Two eastern cottontails were enjoying breakfast in the yard this morning. These native rabbits are most active around dawn and dusk, when they're out grazing on grasses, clover, and other plants. A peaceful start to the day and a reminder that wildlife is all around us if we take a moment to look.

I think this may be the first boat-tailed grackle I've captured at the feeder! The female stopped by for a taste of orange, but a determined starling quickly took over. Sometimes a new visitor's debut is a short one. 😄

Crinum lilies are some of the toughest flowering plants in the South. Their massive bulbs can survive for decades, producing beautiful blooms year after year. I also spotted the developing seed pods from this season's flowers.

One extra fun fact: some Crinum lilies growing in Southern gardens today have been passed down through families for generations, making them true "heirloom" garden plants. 🌸

This bird was singing away at 1:30 AM under a streetlight in an apartment complex.

If my identification is correct, it's likely a Northern Mockingbird. They're one of the few birds that commonly sing at night, especially during breeding season. Bright artificial lights can also encourage them to keep singing long after sunset.

Nature doesn't always stick to business hours.
