Spend 15% of your time on online applications. And the majority of your time meeting people to land interviews.

Applying and waiting puts us into this helpless mindset.

And of course, if it’s working for you, keep doing it!

But if you’ve applied to 20+ places with no response, you need to consider 3 factors:

1. Maybe your resume isn’t all that great (even if you have solid experience, it could be presented in an ineffective way)

2. Possibly your timing is off (solve this with networking)

3. Possibly your application isn’t being seen (solve this with networking)

Start making networking a huge focus.

My clients do it (the right way) and tell me they are actually having FUN meeting people in their job search (yes, even the introverts).

Most people treat job searching like they’re waiting to be chosen. They apply, they hope, they check their email obsessively. It’s passive. It puts all the power in someone else’s hands. And that’s exactly why so many job searches drag on forever.

So stop measuring your job search in applications, and start measuring it in conversations.

Just like that you’ll be at the right place at the right time and your job search will move so much FASTER.

Not all rounds of interviews are the same, each require their own ways of preparing.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in the later rounds.

First-round interviews are focused on making sure the job logistically makes sense for everyone involved.

The later round interviews are typically with the hiring manager or a team member who has a deeper understanding about the role.

So expect more thorough questions that evaluate your skillset.

This can be through skill evaluation questions, role plays, or scenario questions.

🍊 A skill evaluation could sound like:
“Can you walk me through creating a pivot table on excel and how you would analyze that data?”

🍊 A role play question could sound like:
“You’re a customer support manager and I’m an irate customer who received a defective product. Resolve my issue.”

🍊A scenario question could sound like:
“A team member leaves unexpectedly, how would you ensure the project stays on track?”

Now, each profession is different and that will determine the types of questions you’ll be asked.

Woo! On the morning after Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance, I am excited to announce my book has been translated into Spanish and republished!!

“Reverse the Search” is now available in Spanish-speaking markets as “Invierte la Búsqueda!”

Seeing Bad Bunny perform in Spanish and honor Latin identity across cultures was such a blast!

It’s a reminder of why language matters and why stories matter.

I’ve been on a bit of a personal journey myself.

I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish but thought that ship sailed when I never studied it in school.

But I surprised myself and for the past 2 years I have spent a lot of my time in a Spanish-speaking city, and have been taking Spanish lessons 3 times a week.

I am SO BAD at learning languages (even English kicks my butt sometimes), but now in my 30s I am slowly progressing.

A while back, I received this email, and as I read it, I thought, “Wow, this is a solid email. I need to reply!”

But then I got to the end…

And realized she used my own email template on me! 🤣

SO GOOD!

It was the perfect example of putting what I teach into action.

So many people still send out generic networking emails like:

“Hi, Madeline,

You have an impressive career in Human Resources. Can you help me find a job?”

There’s no personalization, no specifics.

This request is too vague for anyone to help.

Instead, here’s what you should do:

🍊 Personalize your email (if it could be sent to anyone, you’re doing it wrong)

🍊 Make a specific ask (the clearer your request, the better your chances of getting help)

It was such a blast being the keynote speaker at Cal Poly Pomona’s Career Readiness Conference!

I walked through 5 lessons to a successful career and then the attendees had wonderfully insightful questions.

Then I got to meet with CPP alumni and students and hear their stories.

The rest of the day had talks, networking, resume reviews, and more.

It’s wonderful to see CPP investing in their students’ career development.

Graduating can feel like falling off of a cliff - unsure what is next or what to do.

A focus on career development while you’re still getting an education is crucial.

I’m excited to celebrate the impressive Beverly Ukpabi this week! She landed a Content Strategist role at LinkedIn!

Lifelong dream unlocked 🔓 my book was sold to Penguin Random House to be published!

Penguin Random House is one of the big 5 book publishers in the US and I am so thrilled to be partnered with them!

Of course, now the real work begins...

They bought it off of an idea I have...

I haven't actually written the book yet!

Which is why I am so excited to take you along with me on this journey.

The publishing world is not one I am familiar with.

It has already been such a learning experience writing the proposal, taking it to market, and having publishers submit offers.

I am doing this because SO MANY of you have asked me to write a book.

You want to read an in-depth Job Shopping manifesto to land the right job, and have job opportunities come to you for the rest of your career.

And now I am answering the call of the folderol!

I have good news and bad news though.

The bad news is, you won't see this book on shelves for about 2 years (that's publishing for ya!).
