It was the selfless acts of many emergency workers and civilians that more lives were not lost that day, Sheriff Mark Dobbs said Friday during an event marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“They had to know this was not the safe place to be. The safe thing to do was to run away,” he said. “That’s not what EMS, fire and police do. They run toward the danger and we see those videos, countless videos, of victims and workers running from that scene as emergency services ran toward it.”

Authorities are investigating alleged illegal gambling operations at four businesses in Butler County, with search warrants being executed Friday by the Butler County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol, particularly in Poplar Bluff.

The investigation follows four months of work by law enforcement, while questions about the legality of gambling-style machines have also been raised by local residents and discussed at a recent Poplar Bluff City Council meeting.
