We love trees. We care for them, protect them, and do everything we can to keep them healthy.
But sometimes… a tree just has to go. 🌳💔

Here are the 5 main reasons we recommend removal (even when we’d rather not):

1- Let's start with an obvious one. If it's dead or dying – A dead tree isn’t just an eyesore, it’s a safety hazard.

2- If it’s too close to a structure – Roots or limbs too close to your home, garage, or foundation can cause serious damage. This is also something serious to think about when planting new trees. Leave room for them to grow, and not just in the next 10 year, but the next 50!

3- It’s leaning or unstable – Especially if the lean has recently changed or worsened. Now, that doesn't mean every tree that has a lean is dangerous, not at all! We know what to look for!

4- Storm damage – Broken trunks or split limbs can create dangerous conditions fast. When a tree has been hit we try to save what we can but sometimes Nature has other plants.

5- Tree risk assessment – If our professional inspection shows the tree is likely to fail, it’s better to act before the storm does.

We don’t take removals lightly, a lot of the time we're the company trying to talk you into saving your money just to save your tree, but when it’s time, we do it safely, cleanly, and with care.

Need a second opinion on a tree that’s making you nervous? We’re happy to take a look and let you know if it's something to take care of or simply leave!

We noticed som things going on with this tree. Let's break down the good, the bad, and what can be done!

1- Did you know a tree can accidentally choke itself out?
It’s called girdling roots—when a tree’s own roots grow in circles around the base and slowly cut off water and nutrients.
It’s sneaky, it’s common, and it often goes unnoticed until the damage is done.

The good news? We can spot it early and take care of it before it becomes a serious problem.
Not sure what’s going on beneath the surface? We’re happy to take a look. 🌳👀

2- Noticed twigs falling from your tree with clean bite marks?
No need to panic—it’s probably just squirrels doing a little home improvement. 🐿️
They bite off small twigs to build their nests (called dreys), especially in spring and fall.

The good news? It’s totally normal—and not harmful to your tree.
Just one of those fun signs your backyard is part of the local wildlife neighborhood. 🌳

Are you seeing any of these signs on your own backyard? It might be time to go out and take a look!

Tree work is often seen as a lumberjack trade—wildly chopping down trees in flannels with an axe.
But skilled tree work is actually a mix of math, science, physics, and climbing—all wrapped into one.
This job is the perfect example.

FROM OUR CANOPY BLOG:
" To get to the location of the tree I needed to walk along a brick paver pathway surrounded by antique lighting, next to a massive plate glass window, down a steep and treacherous stairway, further down the steep hill and then traverse the hill to finally make it to the base of the tree which then towered 80’ above me. My first thought… “How in the hell are we going to get this wood out of here?!?!” "

First up is an entry about Apple Scab- how to spot it early (like last Summer, early!) and how to treat it!

https://www.canopyclimbertreecare.com/blog/treating-apple-scab

🌿 Is Your Apple Tree Looking Spotty? 🍏

Noticed your crabapple tree dropping leaves early or showing dark, funky spots last year? It might not be the weather—it could be apple scab, a common fungal disease in Michigan. Left untreated, it can seriously weaken your tree over time.

🌟 The good news? We’ve got your back! Canopy Climber Tree Care offers professional treatments—like sprays or injections—recommended by our Certified Arborist. We’ll catch it early and get your tree back on track, from roots to canopy.

*** A rough start date to spraying is May 1st (right before your buds turn green.) Unfortunately, if you wait until your tree starts showing symptoms THIS year, it’s already too late. Preventative treatment is the name of the game with apple scab.

📅 Message, call, or email us to schedule your free appointment—your tree (and your apples) will thank you!

Another trip to Las Vegas led to Kyle and I climbing a route called Cat in the Hat up Mescalito. Super super fun route with amazing climbing! Strangely enough, as I climbed up to this spot on the side of the cliff close to 550’ off the ground, I looked over and saw another climber. I felt like I had met this dude before and reactively hollered out, “are you Gary?” Sure enough, it was a super cool dude I climbed with a couple years ago! He caught this super sick image of Kyle heading out on the short traverse pitch. Thanks for the capture! Also, thanks to Kyle for hammering out the last pitch of the climb and for another great trip to .

Last month, and I went out to Vegas to climb some rocks and go to an antique motorcycle auction with my dad and his friends. I brought Zack up his first multi pitch route, Solar Slab Gully, in . We had a blast cruising up a super fun mellow climb that ends on Solar Slab Terrace where we ate chicken tenders and cake from that morning. A great way to save money while in Vegas is to stop at right before entering the canyon, grab some delicious carrot cake and eat it while the sun comes up over the desert. Way better and way cheaper than any of the breakfasts your going to find on the strip! Pretty epic! Here’s to more good times! Cheers!

Here is a picture of Brian trying out a bit of mixed climbing last week at in a little spot out in the woods called the Wolf’s Den. Though this isn’t some of the wildly over hanging mixed routes found in other places around the country and world, it does give you a bit of fun while scratching your tools around hoping for something to hook them into. This was a slight variation to the route that slides up the chimney / chock stone and instead heads up and then right hoping to climb the small pillar without ruining it for everyone else. Also worth noting, this was Brian’s second day ice climbing! He crushed it with solid movement while working his way up the rock and ice. Super rad dude!

Another great day at from last week. , Brian and myself hiked out along the lakeshore trail in search of big ice. With so many climbers coming up to Munising to climb for the fest, it gets pretty hard to find climbable ice that isn’t already snagged by other groups. We started a touch later than we had originally planned but our efforts paid off by hiking 4 miles out to this climb called Strawberry Daze. I had rappelled into some other spots hoping to to find big pillars of ice reaching down towards the dark waters of Mama Superior but only managed to find a 6’ blob of ice hanging a couple hundred feet over the edge. After hiking past classics like Sweet Mother Moses, Giddy Up and Dairyland we managed to find this beauty of a climb! On top of that we ran into .in.mountains , and Mark Synnott] and managed to share a bit of ice with them. The wind was ripping across the lake and managed to blow dirt, snow and the rope up the frozen pitch of ice we climbed. Alpine conditions for sure as Zack and I huddled on an icy ledge waiting for the wind to stop barraging us! Good times for sure!

Thanks to Mark Synnott] for the photo and the company down on the ice.

We have been completely slammed with calls and treatments for Gypsy Moth caterpillars this past month. These nasty things have been eating every leaf off of most White Oaks in our area and have now moved onto every other species of tree. When trees are completely defoliated (all leaves eaten) they can’t photosynthesize the suns rays into food. They also become stressed and use extra energy just trying to stay alive. On top of all the stress to the trees, the caterpillars eat all the leaves and then p**p it out onto your vehicles, houses, decks and even your summer picnics! Please let us know if you need help protecting your trees from Gypsy Moths!
