Oh what a night! Last night at the 14th Blue Water Woman of the Year Awards, six amazing women received the recognition they have all long deserved. I'm so very proud of Allison Arnold of the St. Clair County Library System; Lisa Beedon of Blue Water Developmental Housing and SCC Board of Commissioners; Jazmyn Thomas of the City of Port Huron; Amy Smith of SCC Community Mental Health; Laura Burrell of SONS Outreach; and Emily Goudy of Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer. They. Are. Amazing. They all gave inspirational speeches and motivated the next generation of women. At the end of the program, 30 current and past award recipients gathered on the stage in a show of the incredible HerStory of our community. That is always my favorite part of the evening. :) (P.S. -- Many thanks to my husband, Dale Hemmila, for running around and taking photos all evening. I so appreciate you.)

Happy Women's History Month! The link, below, seems an appropriate way to kick off this month...celebrating women's right to vote. Let's make sure we maintain that during 2026...last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed -- PASSED!!! -- a bill, called the SAVE America Act, that would make it a lot more difficult for women (and other minorities) to vote. Cheers to our freedoms! Many women before us fought for these freedoms...let's make sure we vote in 2026 and exercise our Constitutional rights!

in 1913, more than 5,000 women marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C. to demand the right to vote, marking the first suffrage parade and the first large, organized march on Washington for political purposes. The 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession through Washington, D.C. changed the way protests were viewed and carried out by the American public, and laid the foundation for future marches.

The Procession, unprecedented in both its scale and its tactics, was a major turning point for the woman suffrage movement in the United States. Suffrage leader Alice Paul, who was recently elected head of the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s Congressional Committee, devised the idea for a large-scale public demonstration. Paul, who had spent time in England, witnessed the more militant tactics that the British suffragists used to draw attention to their cause.

Parade organizers strategically selected March 3, 1913 for the march. Woodrow Wilson was to be inaugurated as the new President the following day, and national press was in town and idly awaiting the inaugural festivities.

Paul insisted that the parade march down Pennsylvania Avenue, deliberately following the same route that the inaugural parade would take the next day. The contrast between the two parades would prove striking. Reporters flocked to the suffrage parade, leaving Wilson to arrive at the train station unheralded.

Despite the chaos and violence that initially ensued during the parade, Paul declared the event a success. The parade made national headlines and once again captured the public’s interest in the suffrage movement. Even those who opposed votes for women acknowledged that, as citizens, the women had the right to peacefully assemble.

Happy Galentine's Day to all of the wonderful women in my life! Whether you are my in-person BFF or a friend found online, or someone in between, I'm so grateful for your friendship...and I want to make sure you are all around entertaining me for many years to come!

If you've known me a while and know anything about me, you know that, almost five years ago, in 2021, I received a pacemaker. The way it all came to be was almost accidental.

In honor of February being Heart Health Month and Women's Heart Health Month, I'm re-posting the blog entry I wrote about my pacemaker experience in the hopes that it will encourage my friends to take good care of themselves...I need you. Really. Yes I do.

I haven't posted this in a few years (I try not to overshare it), but if it inspires anyone out there to pick up the phone and schedule a doctor's appointment (and I've been told before that it has), then it is worth re-posting today, on this day when I'm so grateful for my girlfriends.

Hugs!!!
Patti 🙂

So today began my favorite work-week of the year...introducing the 2026 Blue Water Woman of the Year Award Recipients! We hit the ground running and awarded THREE of six awards within one hour! First stop: the St. Clair County Community Services Coordinating Body (SCCCSCB) meeting, where we were so pleased to present Amy Smith of St. Clair County Community Mental Health with the Blue Water Woman Community Services Leader of the Year Award! Amy serves as assistant division director at SCCCMH and in that role serves as CSCB staff support. Much of the work Amy does is "behind the scenes" and she is not someone who seeks the spotlight, but that is what makes her so deserving of recognition. We are so excited about honoring you from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11 at the McMorran Place Theatre at the Blue Water Woman of the Year Awards. Congratulations, Amy!
