PennDOT Work Schedule for the Week
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Mifflin County the week of August 25. This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions. The scope of work for the week is as follows:
Bridge Maintenance & Cleaning
• Route 333 at a bridge Spanning Platte Hollow Run in Thompsontown Borough. Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.
• Route 322 eastbound at a pair of bridges spanning Kishacoquillas Creek approximately a mile south of Reedsville in Brown Township. Monday, August 25, through Thursday, August 28. PennDOT will implement single-lane closures while this work is completed.
Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.
Manual Patching
• Route 235 between Black Dog Valley Road in Delaware Township and Route 2017 (Dimmsville Road) in Greenwood Township. Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 333 starting at Route 3028 (McLaughlin Road) and continuing eastbound approximately 9.5 miles. Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 2006 (Summit Road) starting approximately a third of a mile east of Route 522 and continuing eastbound for approximately two tenths of a mile. Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.
Shoulder Maintenance
• Route 655 between the Huntingdon-Mifflin County line in Menno Township and Route 1005 (Tea Creek Road) in Brown Township. Monday, August 25, through Wednesday, August 27. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• All of Route 4007 (Jacks Mountain/Willis Road). Wednesday, August 27, and Thursday, August 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 2002 (Belltown Road) starting approximately two-tenths of a mile west of Alfarata road in Decatur Township and continuing westbound approximately 600 feet. Wednesday, August 27, through Friday, August 29. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 22 between Substation Road in Wayne Township and Route 4007 (Jacks Mountain Road) in Oliver Township. Friday, August 29. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Shoulder cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulder areas. Shoulder grading involves the shaping and stabilizing of those same areas. Both operations improve drainage, allow water to leave the roadway, and eliminate shoulder drop-offs. These are crucial highway maintenance operations because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.
