Investigators found 16 dead cats trapped inside a house where they had been left without adequate food or water. Police were called to the property after concerns were raised about numerous cats believed to be inside.

According to investigators, 34-year-old Matthew Krautkramer had moved out of the home in June 2025 to live with his girlfriend, leaving 17 cats behind. He claimed he cared for them until breaking his ankle around Thanksgiving and said he asked someone else to look after them. However, that person told police they were never asked to care for the cats.

Krautkramer initially faced 48 animal abuse-related charges but later pleaded guilty to four counts of mistreating animals causing death. He was sentenced to 32 days in jail, three years of probation, and is permanently barred from owning, possessing, or caring for any animals. He must also undergo a mental health evaluation and follow any recommended treatment plan.

Halo, a 12-year-old Yorkie adopted from the Fauquier SPCA, somehow became trapped deep inside a groundhog hole, leaving his loving family terrified. But thanks to the incredible teamwork, patience, and compassion of the Fauquier County Fire Rescue System and Animal Control, Halo was safely brought back to the surface.

A special thank you to B.C. Mackison, Lt. McDonald, Tech. Stroop, and Tech. Plaster for going above and beyond to rescue this beloved little pup. Their dedication and care made all the difference.
