Sacred Windows

Sacred Windows An invitation to gaze into heaven's stained glass windows - Beauty, Truth and Goodness. The mind must be fed constantly with truth in order to thrive and grow.

A window is a barrier of some fragile material that stands between the outside and the inside. Here, the outside is the world of God’s creation; the inside is the inner world of each human soul. When we encounter the many forms of Beauty, Truth and Goodness around us, our souls are gazing through sacred windows. Beauty appeals to the emotions and is the foundation for the supernatural gift of Hope

. Of all God’s creatures, only humans have the capacity to feel deeply the beauty and inspiration of the created world and hope for something even loftier. Truth nurtures the intellect and is the foundation of the supernatural gift of Faith. Truth saves us from error and ennobles us to live in community and in harmony with God’s creation. Goodness appeals to the will and is the foundation of the supernatural gift of Charity, the very essence of God’s Life. Authentic love always takes the form of concrete acts of heroism, generosity, and self-sacrifice. Our souls are enriched and strengthened by the humble goodness we find all around us.

The science of disguising things is endlessly fascinating. Today we call this business “camouflage” which is a modern word of uncertain origin. It probably comes from a lyrical French expression which describes the action of “blowing smoke in someone’s face”! Now you see me, now you don’...

If you were a musician and the celebrated Ludwig von Beethoven called you “the greatest composer who ever lived," you might take that as a compliment. And indeed it was. Beethoven gave that title to George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) – and it was well-earned. (Right: Portrait of George Frideric ...

Sometime around the year 1800, the German mystic, Anne Catherine Emmerich, had a vision of Jacob’s ladder ascending to heaven. Here is how she described it: Then I saw the ladder that Jacob beheld in his dream… It was rising up to heaven from Jacob, where he lay upon the earth. It

A young commentator on CNN has recently gained some notoriety by showing a few surprising graphs and charts on air and exclaiming, “Holy Toledo!” It’s a funny old expression, isn’t it? And it’s ironic to hear it coming from a young man on a secular news station. It just goes to show how de...
