Sacred Windows

Sacred Windows An invitation to gaze into heaven's stained glass windows - Beauty, Truth and Goodness. The mind must be fed constantly with truth in order to thrive and grow.

A window is a barrier of some fragile material that stands between the outside and the inside. Here, the outside is the world of God’s creation; the inside is the inner world of each human soul. When we encounter the many forms of Beauty, Truth and Goodness around us, our souls are gazing through sacred windows. Beauty appeals to the emotions and is the foundation for the supernatural gift of Hope

. Of all God’s creatures, only humans have the capacity to feel deeply the beauty and inspiration of the created world and hope for something even loftier. Truth nurtures the intellect and is the foundation of the supernatural gift of Faith. Truth saves us from error and ennobles us to live in community and in harmony with God’s creation. Goodness appeals to the will and is the foundation of the supernatural gift of Charity, the very essence of God’s Life. Authentic love always takes the form of concrete acts of heroism, generosity, and self-sacrifice. Our souls are enriched and strengthened by the humble goodness we find all around us.

The Catholic Church has endured many slanders throughout time but one of the grandest is the Dark Ages hoax. Read about it in this week’s Sacred Windows and join our weekly mailing list for more truth and beauty.

If I were to ask any high-school-educated person about the Dark Ages, they would probably have heard of the term and think it referred to a period of time after the Fall of the Roman Empire (476 AD) where civilization basically vanished until the Renaissance. In this view, barbarians roamed the worl...

All Souls Day occasions a sober reflection on the ultimate fate of our souls. This week’s Sacred Windows highlights one church in Rome that does that especially well. Please check it out and sign up for our weekly newsletter.

When it comes to saints and souls, the Catholic Church has it all over any other human institution for sheer drama. Saints’ relics are a big part of that. How else do we explain, for example, the fact that St. Catherine of Siena’s head (with the leathery

The Cross of Christ rules the world, but sometimes we need to be reminded of that truth. In this week’s Sacred Windows you can read about a German stigmatist whose life was nothing short of amazing. And please join our mailing list to receive our newsletter every Sunday.

How is it possible for a person to live for nearly forty years without eating, drinking, or sleeping? Humanly speaking, it is not. But the Creator of human nature is not limited by human constraints. He sustains all things by His grace and chooses certain unique individuals throughout history to be....

Stunning nature scenes and the amazing beauty of animal life are clear windows through which we can get a glimpse of God’s grandeur, His artistry, His creative genius. I don’t want to reduce God’s actions to human categories, but I can’t help but think of natural beauty as God showing off a ...

The Shroud of Turin is the most scientifically studied relic in history, but did you know of the miraculous journey it took to get to us in the modern age? Read about it in this week’s Sacred Windows and sign up for our weekly newsletter for more inspiration.

It boggles the mind to think that the Catholic Church possesses a relic that actually wrapped the human body of Our Lord Jesus Christ at the time of His death. And it’s not any random relic. It is the most direct possible material witness to His Crucifixion: the Shroud of Turin. The most mind-bogg...

The answer to the question in the title is this: Maybe. By now, most Catholics know that Pope Leo XIV’s surname is Prevost, so I’m sure historians and animal lovers will soon be digging into his family history to find out if one of his ancestors was a French naturalist or something who gave his

You may not have known that one of the great pop stars of our generation wrote a song in Latin. Cat Stevens gave us a hauntingly beautiful anthem to Charity, which you can read about in this week’s Sacred Windows.

Much of the music of the 1970s megastar, Cat Stevens, is an acquired taste. Even as a fan of his, I’ll admit that. However, like any good artist, his songs open windows of grace and insight for the listeners if you give them a chance. A friend introduced

If you want to be amazed today, read the story of an incredible nun who evangelized American Indians even before America existed as a nation. Sacred Windows invites you to join our weekly newsletter list when you visit the site.

It’s a story that’s almost too incredible to believe, but a little-known Spanish nun who lived in the 1600s spent more than a decade visiting various tribes of Indians in New Mexico and Texas to teach them the Catholic Faith. These visits took place in the decade of the 1620s, but here’s the a...
