The national survival rate for cardiac arrest is about 10 percent. In Jefferson County, it’s double that. The statistic is impressive. Tammy Ridgway, a firefighter-paramedic and the medical service officer with East Jefferson Fire Rescue, said it’s largely due to quick action from bystanders: calling 911, starting chest compressions or applying an automated external defibrillator, or AED.
