NAME OF THE GLAND

The gland is called the supraorbital gland (also known as the nasal salt gland).

It is located just above the penguin’s eyes, close to the nasal passage.

HOW IT WORKS

Penguins often consume seawater directly or indirectly (when eating fish or krill).

The seawater has high salt content, which can be toxic if it accumulates in the bloodstream.

The supraorbital gland filters the blood:

1. Blood containing excess salt passes through the gland.

2. The gland uses specialized cells and active transport mechanisms to remove sodium and chloride ions.

3. This salty solution is excreted through the nostrils, often appearing as salty droplets or a runny discharge from the beak.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

Penguins don’t need to find fresh water to survive. They can drink seawater without harm.
