Portales Police Department Community Alert: Don't Let Porch Pirates Steal Your Holiday Joy!

The holiday season is approaching, and unfortunately, so is an increase in package thefts. Porch pirates operate quickly, often striking in broad daylight. Let's work together to keep your deliveries safe!

How to Protect Your Packages:

• Track Your Deliveries: Utilize tracking numbers and sign up for delivery alerts so you know exactly when your package is expected. The less time it sits on your porch, the better.

• Use Alternate Delivery Locations:

• Have packages sent to your workplace if allowed.

• Ship to a trusted neighbor who is usually home.

• Use in-store or curbside pickup options when available.

• Utilize delivery lockers (like Amazon Hub Lockers) or have packages held at the local Post Office or a carrier service center (UPS/FedEx).

• Provide Hidden Instructions: When ordering, use the delivery instructions to ask the carrier to place the package in an area out of sight from the street, such as behind a pillar, a bush, or by a side door.

• Invest in Security: A visible doorbell camera or security camera is a great deterrent. If a theft occurs, the footage is crucial evidence.

• Require a Signature: For very valuable items, choose the option to require a signature upon delivery.
