This is a watercolor & ink rendition, 12x15", of the Third Church of Boston, "Old Cedar" Meetinghouse, 1670, on the site of where now is the Old South Church, Boston and drawn from a description of the church. It was built in Cornhill (Washington Street), heading out to Boston Neck, with Back Bay mud flats and the Fens in the background. The large building to the right was the Province House of the Royal Governour.

This church ran into a controversy regarding the Governour upholding the King of England's wish that all churches worship in the Anglican Church. For three weeks they could not meet in the building. Later, in Old South Church the British soldiers pulled out the pews and used the inside as a horse stall. It was said at the time, "No King, but Jesus!"

The Bible verse is from Isaiah 33:22, from the Geneva Bible that the Puritans read from exclusively, rather than the King James. The KJV was not allowed in America until the 1800s. One difference in the translations is the word "apostasia" (II Thessalonians 2:3), translated "departure" in the Geneva, but translated as "falling away" by the subsequent King James version.

This "portrait" was made from Captain John Bonner's Map of Boston, 1722, after I saw within the map a young man in a tricornered hat with his mouth open, spewing out tea from the Boston Tea Party, 1773 and shouting to the town, "No Taxation Without Representation!" It also bears an uncanny resemblance to the New England Patriots' NFL football franchaise logo.(copyright 2015, Geoffrey R Stiles. All reproduction rights reserved by the artist upon sale.)
