On Saturday, Mariah Daniel, in her pink kitty shirt and purple shorts, hopped up onto the wooden counter of her grandparents, Nathan and Shirley Daniel, produce stand catty corner to Sequoia Middle School, and began to bag a few items.

“She helps a lot,” said Shirley Daniel with smile.

The stand at 1584 N. Prospect St. joins many favorites, including Kellerhals on Henderson Avenue, as an alternative to grocery store produce options.

The Spirit of 1945 Project is looking for and collecting two types of photos — headshots of veterans in uniform who served during WWII, and of couples who were together during WWII or got married during or after the war — all of it part of Congress passing a unanimous resolution in 2010 in support of the observance of a national “Spirit of ‘45” Day to be observed the second Sunday of every August.

Residents of the Orange Belt will have little trouble finding a place where to purchase fireworks for this Fourth of July.

There are 35 locations spread out from the cities of Lindsay and Porterville to many county locations.

Sales in all areas begin at noon on June 28. For booths in the cities of Porterville and Lindsay, sales will end at 10 p.m. on July 4. For the booths in the county, sales can continue until midnight on the Fourth of July.

The Summer Night Light Program will once again be hosted in different areas of Porterville. The program offers free nighttime activities for youth and aims to curb violence and other negative activity by keeping selected parks and recreational facilities open during the summer months.

The City Pool is open daily during the summer hours and includes a zero-depth, modern design pool facility with a 137-foot slide, a 1-meter board, dive tank, water features and lap swim area.

Recreational Swim is $1 for youth and $2 for adults and offered from 12:15 to 4:15 p.m. weekdays, and from 1 to 5 p.m. weekends.
