Sarah Rector, born March 3, 1902, in Oklahoma, changed history as a young girl.

A member of the Muscogee Creek Nation and of Black and Native American heritage, she inherited 160 acres of land through the Creek Nation’s allotment system, valued at $556.50. While many thought the land was useless, oil was discovered in 1913, earning her $300 a day, equivalent to $10,000 today.

Her story made national headlines, and she was called “The Richest Black Girl in America.” Since she was still a child, Booker T. Washington helped manage her fortune and arranged for her to attend Tuskegee Institute. By 18, Sarah owned homes, land, and businesses. Later, she moved her family to Kansas City, Missouri. Though the Great Depression reduced much of her wealth, she retained her land and home until her death in 1967.
