Episode 42: Mike Schmidt of Urban League of Portland and “The Schmidt Show PDX”

Former Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt joins us to talk about his work as General Council at Urban League of Portland and his new podcast, The Schmidt Show PDX. Mike turned lemons into lemonade, turning the expensive negative campaign against him into promotion for a podcast that focuses on the forces for good in Portland. We also shoot the proverbial s**t about the Current City Council, Portland Police Bureau, County politics, and so much more.

Episode 41:

We talk to two insiders providing homeless services downtown to get deeper into what Portland needs to do better. Liz Starke is Development Director of Rose Haven, a day shelter and community center serving women, children and gender non-conforming folks experiencing the trauma of abuse, loss of home and other disruptive life challenges. Justine Ziegler is Development Director at Outside In, helping homeless youth and other marginalized people move towards improved health and self-sufficiency.

Well this is super interesting. "potential protests and unlawful assembly events" as well as the rest is pretty loaded language.

One might think that ReadyPDX would maybe be geared to give everyone direct information on how to get informed when there's a public emergency and needs critical information. That's what we thought initially when seeing the name. But it is not.

On the city PBEM web site, if you know to look there, is a link for "Get Ready" which will lead you to the publicalerts.org page which will lead you the Multnomah County alerts page where you can sign up and get weather alerts. And a "Business Preparedness Bulletin".

And that's it.

So, to recap: A potential public order event involving a demonstration? Your business can be notified and I guess- lock the doors?

A potential public order event such as an emergency toxic spill, a fire, Gamera vs. Guiron, RFK Jr. force-injecting Ivermectin into your 5G enabled pets, etc? Nada.

We don't understand how this warrants it's own web site (.org? why not .gov?) or falls under the hashtag .

"Potential Protests" which are part of our First Amendment rights shouldn't be classified as a public emergency event. Even an "unlawful assembly" which is by PPB Directive 0635.10 definition " Five or more assembled persons who engage in trespass or intentionally cause, or with reckless disregard create a risk of causing, public inconvenience, annoyance, or alarm".

We need to do and be better.

Community is everything. Please reach out if you are in utter despair. We need all of us, including you, to live and thrive together regardless what challenges might come.

If the best you can do is make it from minute to minute taking a breath, then that's fine too.

It's funny, in a sickening way, to see Adams and Gonzalez promote garbage narratives calling out their opponents, both of whom are women of color with far more experience and expertise solving the issues at hand, using incorrect and outdated information, or in the case of Sam- actually just fu***ng lying (saying that Shannon "quit" her temporary job).

Adams when he was mayor did nothing to solve the homeless crisis Portland was facing then. And Gonzalez' claim to solving the issue was apparently denying blankets and water to people struggling in the streets and fu***ng over Portland Street Response while putting the entire Portland Fire and Rescue bureau in danger because he can't manage the budget of a single bureau.

How the hell are either qualified to be mayor? They aren't.

Please vote for and please do rank Liv Osthus and Carmen Rubio for Mayor.

Episode 34 where Kip and Tim get caught up with Lisa Freeman and discuss what she's experienced being on the campaign trail and knocking on doors, talking with her neighbors about the challenges and hopes they have, how the city could budget more towards violence prevention, and so much more.

We know the past several decades of Portland "leadership" have failed us greatly and the severity of the challenges we face are due to capitulation to big business interests. Let's not have more of the same.

And remember, Don't Rank Rene. Please.
