Huge thanks to Prime Life for bringing the Mirador Magazine story to their podcast family. We always so appreciate the opportunity to talk to folks about our work and why accessible reading is so important in people's lives. This was a super fun interview!

Reading can help maintain cognition and reduce anxiety in individuals with dementia. Nikki Jardin, publisher and co-founder of Mirador Magazine, discusses how using larger fonts, simple page layouts, and shorter sentences can make reading more accessible and enjoyable for individuals with dementia.....

Thank you, Teepa Snow for another lesson in how we can find ways to work brain health exercise into our every day lives!

Many thanks to Lori La Bey and Alzheimer's Speaks for welcoming me, along with Laurette Klier of Nana's Books, Luke Gilligan of Resense and Eric Kolb of Songs & Smiles for a lovely conversation about the necessity for adaptive publications for our community.

I loved hearing from my colleagues about what moved them to work in this particular genre and the good work they are putting forth into the world. And, as always, I'm so appreciative of Lori La Bey - her knowledge and passion always shines through!

It's funny sometimes, how we can miss what is right in front of us! As I was walking back to my car I just happened to look up and see a big, beautiful mural by Ernesto Maranje. We featured Ernesto in Volume 6: Skylines and Avenues, and he was gracious enough to let us put one of his works on his cover. I knew there were two of his murals in Portland, but I hadn't seen this one before. He is such an amazing artist, and you really get the power of his imagery live and in person. So, thank you, Ernesto for your gift of public art!

In Mirador Magazine Volume 12: Tea and Tap we introduced a new contributor, Alexis Baker from Bridgetown Music Therapy! She wrote up a rhythmic exercise that is super fun, and easy to do! It's an added bonus that Alexis and Bridgetown's Life Enrichment Specialist Lindsey Bretzman live nearby - so we got together to try it out!

We SO appreciate all the work that Teepa Snow and the Snow Approach Foundation, Inc. do for care partners and families out in the world. Her work was instrumental in helping us with our own family members as well as giving us insight when we began to put together Mirador Magazine. So, in that vein it's always such an honor to spend time with her and talk a little about Mirador and what we're up to.

In this episode of Time With Teepa, Teepa talks to Co-Founder Nikki Jardin about how Mirador has evolved over the last 13 issues.

We love when readers send us photos of how their loved ones engage with Mirador Magazine. This came in today from the daughter of an 86-year old woman with dementia. Her mom loves to color and has fun with the coloring page we include in each issue of the magazine. We work hard to make each page something people can engage in at multiple levels and we're so happy this reader finds joy in the art she is creating.

By the by: This particular image is from Volume 9: Paint and Prairie and was contributed by acclaimed artist. Betty LaDuke, who we actually featured in Volume 7: Feast and Forage (she also contributed the cover for that issue). Betty herself is 91, still paints every day and travels the country, exhibiting her work in museums and galleries. We appreciate her generosity and are honored to display her work in Mirador!

Singer JAY ALLEN has raised millions of dollars for Alzheimer's research as well as raising awareness about the impact of dementia-related illness on families worldwide. His song, "Blank Stares," was written in honor of his late mother, who passed in 2019 due to complications from dementia. Jay has recently begun his first headlining tour, named after The Night of Hope, an organization dedicated to bringing awareness and education about Alzheimer's disease. We attended The Night of Hope Gala, in Kansas City last year and are looking forward to going again in June! This is a passionate group of community-oriented people looking to make positive change.

Jay is coming to Portland, OR on February 24th - playing at The Ponderosa. We're looking forward to seeing this show and hearing Jay's message of hope!
