i wrote and produced No Sun with not much more than a few synthesizers and a laptop. in fact, the album was mostly recorded when i was crashing on friend’s couches after my separation. i lugged my set up around town, settling into a new space, opening up a session, improvising for hours, and then carving the sounds. i wrote anywhere and everywhere, making conscious choices to keep my tools limited and to record using analog methods, so i wouldn’t be distracted by overediting or feel the need to cover up imperfections. i wanted the production to communicate emotions of aloneness and sorrow but also the liberatory feelings of change and renewal.
with the help of some incredible instrumentalists and the golden ears of engineer .wav , i then brought these sessions to stones throw studios for polishing.
in the end, no sun is a DIY record produced and written by the artist herself. i’m not a tech whiz by any stretch, but what i always tell my students is that no amount of so-called expertise or gatekept knowledge can eclipse artistic vision.
No Sun is out this friday 8/27 🌚🌝
