If, like us, reading more books is on your list of resolutions for 2026, consider checking out Blue Mar, by Francesca Varela. She's one of our favorite new authors. Read Clark's review of her book here. And we have an interview with Francesca on our website as well.

Blue Mar is a powerful and moving book from a talented writer about difficult topics, and at the same time, it’s a cautionary tale about saving the environment, our relationships and ourselves. Humans are not particularly good about receiving and acting upon cautionary information, but I hope many

This is a shot of the gorgeous “tulip stairs” in the Queen’s House in Greenwich taken on our recent trip. They are so beautiful and, apparently, the first geometric self-supporting spiral stair in Britain. We happened to catch the end of one of those “Now You See Me” movies about magic recently and the stairs were the closing shot.

It’s the official launch day for Cake and Eat It, our 13th book together. And this one is a doozy. It’s set in the fictional Rose and Thorn restaurant, and focuses on Anzi, a pastry chef with a tortured past who is given an incredible opportunity — by her hot ex, Roland, who destroyed her life, broke her heart and ruined a perfectly good cake. Expect a lot of restaurant puns in the coming weeks. Learn more and get your copy at our online store: https://www.pumpjackpress.com/pumpjackstore

Anzi loves to bake. She’s the pastry chef at the quirky Rose and Thorn restaurant. What she loves most about baking is the precision and predictability. If you have the right ingredients and follow the recipe exactly, success is certain. There’s zero risk. It’s the same strategy she uses with....

Clark finally got the chance to break out the book darts we picked up at the recent Book Fest. The darts are great for marking favorite passages without messing up pages. In this case, Clark is marking passages in Blue Mar, by Francesca Varela, a good read about climate change, corporate greed and the search for authentic self. We have an interview with Francesca coming soon.

It’s a cracking good collection of short stories — at the intersection of sci-fi and horror — based on the world he created for his novel, Far Point. Here's the blurb:
It’s the 1990s, and new lifestyle and cooking shows on cable television are exploding in popularity. Anzi, head baker at the Rose and Thorn, has a life-changing opportunity to get in on the ground floor when she’s offered an audition in NYC for her own baking show by a long-ago ex, now a bigshot TV executive. But when their unresolved past threatens to derail her dream and upend her life, Anzi has to dig deeper to figure out what really matters. Sparkling with humor and kindness, "Cake and Eat It" tells an unforgettable story about love, found family, and letting go.

We've got a new Author Spotlight up on the blog. Fio talks about why he writes ("a pressure release valve so all your ideas don’t pop your skull"), his process, and his forthcoming collection of fantasy-horror short stories set in the fantastical city of Far Point. Paraphrasing Stephen King, if the novel is a relationship, the short story is like a kiss in the dark with a stranger. It's a great interview!

The short story is just as long as a novel; the only difference is that you only get a few thousand words to tell it, and that means you'd better be damn sure those words are the right ones because there’s no room for error in there. I’m not trying to take anything away from the novel, though—...

Our Story

We’ve written eight books together so far. Our newest series kicks off in June with the Gates of Mars, book one in the Halo Trilogy. It’s a hard-boiled detective series set in a future in which a few families control all the wealth and leave Earth — overcrowded, and crippled by poverty, disease and environmental catastrophes — for luxury domes on Mars. And yes, there are giraffes.

And don’t forget about our other books:

The four-book Cowboy and the Vampire Collection — Love, lust, action and humor as the worst of the undead collide with the best of the West.

The three-book Bonnie and Clyde series — It’s a high-octane what-if story of love and redemption, using the the forgotten lessons of the past to highlight the economic challenges of the present as the infamous outlaws battle the forces of greed.
