It’s a hard-boiled detective series set in a future in which a few families control all the wealth and leave Earth — overcrowded, and crippled by poverty, disease and environmental catastrophes — for luxury domes on Mars. And yes, there are giraffes.

The three-book Bonnie and Clyde series — It’s a high-octane what-if story of love and redemption, using the the forgotten lessons of the past to highlight the economic challenges of the present as the infamous outlaws battle the forces of greed.

Parts of the plot put lives in danger that I felt had no business being threatened. But I darn near laughed my pants off and even managed to be both horrified and disgusted. “Introducing racial issues isn’t the only adjustment the authors have made to the vampire mythos, but it’s more than just the details that set this series apart. Rather, it’s the way the authors utilize those details to create meaningful conflicts and world-altering choices for the characters.
