Hello everyone, Hunter here...
In the winter of 2011 i found myself hunched over a boombox making mixtapes for my girlfriend, enthralling myself with the sound and art of cassettes. I always sought them out as a very unique and creative portal of expression. In the same coming months a friend approached me with his demo tape of experimental electronica and we began discussing releasing the album on tape. From there the idea began to form itself and Purr Tapes was inevitably born (the name comes from a tattoo on my ankle for those of you who don't know). It wasn't long before me and Krystal were talking to some of our favorite musicians and sending out tapes to places around the world we've only dreamt of seeing in this lifetime...
I could have never imagined the support and interest this little label has gotten over the past 3 years. We have gotten to meet and talk to some of the nicest and brightest artists and musicians from around the world who somehow come to share and receive the vision of Purr. This label has always been about community and has definitely challenged us both to problem solve in the most constructive ways possible. Everything we have ever released was made and constructed with our own hands and that is something that i'm truly proud of.
Even through sleepless nights trying to figure out why our dubbers weren't working or why our printer couldn't seem to print straight, i always felt like what we were doing was useful and real. Getting to share music with the world for artists who don't even know how good they are is probably one of the best things i'll ever get to do, and that's why i started this whole thing in the first place.
But, as we all know, time marches on and things always find a way to change when you least expect it. We've seen so many labels blossom in our footsteps which ultimately makes all this worthwhile...
Saying goodbye is never easy but to be able to pass the torch to so many wonderful beings makes it a little easier to handle. We've had so much fun with all of you and i like to think that we've all learned something from each other.
From here, we will no longer be pressing anything under Purr Tapes. Any stock that we have up in the shop can still be purchased but after that there will be no more. Please feel free to contact either one of us so we can all continue to collaborate and work on projects together. This is certainly not the end of our tape endeavors as I'm sure we will each want to start up other labels and imprints, possibly with new ideas and goals.
Thank you all so much for everything. This has seriously been such a ride and it will only lead to bigger and better things from here. Take care of each other, always dream big, and never stop listening to tapes.
We love you all.
