Merrow pops up about once a month at Heavenly Creatures, with their next pop-up taking place June 7-8.

After months of committee discussions, impassioned pleas, and amendments, a “Right to Know Who’s Policing You” ordinance from Portland City Councilor Sameer Kanal passed 8-4 Wednesday, May 27.

“You have a right to know that law enforcement agencies are operating transparently and accountably,” Kanal said during an April 30 City Council hearing. “You have the right to the information that you need if you wish to seek justice or a remedy in the future, like a lawyer, [needing] to know which agency may have picked up their client.”

By an 8-4 vote, Portland City Council passed an ordinance yesterday that would ban law enforcement officials from wearing masks, while also ordering officers to wear clear identification when working within city limits.

The council also approved (by unanimous vote) financial support for Black families trying to purchase homes in two planned developments in historically Black neighborhoods.

A proposal to let the private US Tennis Association take the reins of Portland's public tennis courts, including the city's cherished tennis center, has gained momentum.

Responses have been mixed. Some fear handing the tennis center over to a private organization would limit access to what is currently an affordable, inclusive space.

If the deal goes into effect by the end of the calendar year, as the budget sets out, the city stands to save a little more than $1 million annually on tennis center staffing and maintenance. The partnership would also eliminate four full-time city jobs, and could impact dozens more seasonal positions.

Nine people are missing and one is dead after a chemical explosion at a paper mill in Longview, Washington Tuesday morning. The deadly incident happened at the Nippon Dynaware Kraft paper pulp factory; it injured and hospitalized 10 people, including one firefighter.

PLUS, a proposal to let the private US Tennis Association take the reins of Portland’s public tennis courts has gained momentum, and Jesse Calhoun, the man suspected of killing multiple women in the Portland area in 2023, was indicted for the death of a fifth woman, 22-year-old Ashley Real. Real’s body was found in a pond in Eagle Creek.
