We had the honor of hosting Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal at Soapbox Seattle last night!

There is so much hopelessness for sale. Don't buy it. Especially when:

💚 There are now 60 reps who don't take corporate money for their campaigns. When Pramila first got elected, she was one of just 4. Sure, there's still a ways to go, but that is a 1400% increase!!

💚 The "Fresh Bucks" program which gives monthly $$ to people in Seattle to spend on fresh produce, is being introduced NATIONALLY!! if every American had $60 to spend on fresh food, how would things change?

💚 Your congress rep will come and show you that things are changing and invite you to have input in their priorities

You have power. Use it. And make your congressperson laugh.

"It was such a hopeful, joyful, and productive conversation," Rep Jayapal says. "This is what community looks like."

Huge huge huge shout-out to partners like Slip Belltown that allow communities like this to grow.

Climate activists take on a new foe: Data centers
As climate action stalls, the movement is finding new energy in local fights to stop polluting, power-hungry facilities.

That was recently in play in Seattle, where the climate activist group 350 Seattle joined the push to pass a moratorium on new large data centers after the news broke this spring that five major facilities could be coming to town. If all the projects were actually built, they would require about one-third the amount of power that Seattle uses on a typical day. The Seattle City Council passed the moratorium unanimously earlier this month, making it the largest city in the U.S. so far to suspend approvals. For local activists working on an issue as amorphous and overwhelming as climate change, it was invigorating to get involved in a mission with a concrete, local outcome.

“For us, it was a very good on-ramp for people who just want to do something and want to turn that powerlessness into something meaningful,” said Nivi Achanta, the founder and CEO of Soapbox Project, a local climate action group that advocated for the moratorium. The group’s Signal chat buzzed as the city council weighed the policy: “People were, like, pulling out drinks and grabbing their popcorn and actually watching these city council politics unfold in a way that’s so much more fun than anything I’ve experienced outside of this, in the general climate movement,” Achanta said.]

Behind every headline is a team of organizers or something like that

CONGRATULATIONS to Seattle on being the largest US city to pass a data center moratorium and congratulations to us ☀️💚

It's easy to say "ok now the real work begins" and that is true but it's also time to FIRST CELEBRATE that we came together and bullied bill|onaires on public comment and it was really truly fun

Major shouts to for getting the Soapbox crew out to City Hall, for helping us get trained on public comment and getting us these sick screenprinted shirts, and for being Pearl Jam Guy

You can find this piece at The Guardian or you can just share it and congratulate us thanks!

We're living in a dystopia right now & we NEED BETTER STORIES!

Great news: we have & joining us to talk about how storytelling creates change.

This is a 🍑JUICY🍑 topic and the direction it takes will be shaped by YOU, so don't miss your chance to join us for dinner & discussion.

Wanna talk about propaganda? Wanna talk about the marketing of the American Dream? Wanna talk about how YOU can reshape our world?

Well, Soapbox Seattle is the place to be on every Tuesday night if you care about making this city better but you don't necessarily know where to start.

With Evan's experience creating content and connecting with you online (and in these city council chambers) plus Kate's tenure as a journalist at our FAAAVE news outlet , we have you more than covered. Oh and also you don't have to worry about dinner bc chef Ash is feeding us.

Having a hard time making friends in Seattle and/or spiraling into an existential crisis? Well. Let us be your support group ✅✅✅🤩 we have FOOD!

June's topic at Soapbox Project is all around STORYTELLING, and it's packed with exciting concerts, Q&As, workshops, and performances.

In Seattle, we gather EVERY TUESDAY EVENING at in Seattle with 💚 plant-based 💚(vegan) dinner served by of

Week 1 we'll DREAM about the future through asking what *is* utopia? What narratives are missing? What is our role in storytelling? We'll do this as an immersive concert headlines by .isabella

Week 2 we'll LEARN from experts: and from Grist

Week 3 we'll ACT through a storytelling workshop!

Week 4 we'll REFLECT through a community storytelling showcase on climate and radical possibility.

We also have a public comment party on June 3, a free community event on June 30, and much more!

P.S. after 5 months of piloting Soapbox in Portland, we're taking the summer to reset and reimagine, so that's why we only have 1 event in Portland in June instead of our weekly!

P.p.s. send this to a friend who complains about how hard it is to make friends as an adult and tell them to just come to Soapbox seriously
