Golden West Hotel - Tour Guide The Golden West Hotel was a vibrant place of employment and socializing for Portland's African Ameri Under the management of Geo. P. With the Mt.

In the early year's of this century, the Golden West Hotel offered blacks the best, and only, hostelry in Oregon. Connected with the hotel is a well appointed barber shop owned by Waldo Bogle; the finest ice cream and candy shop west of Chicago, serving its patrons all kinds of delicacies and soft drinks under the constant supervision of A.G. Green, the proprietor; a well appointed restaurant serv

ing all kinds of dishes. Wo Gong, manager; a well furnished club room with Turkish baths and gymnasium for the Golden West Athletic league. Moore; all provide for the amusement and satisfaction of the guest. PORTLAND TIMES AUGUST 2, 1919
Until Oregon's public accommodations law was passed in 1953, this was the only hotel in Portland catering to African Americans. Built in 1906 for railroad men away from home, it soon became a social center, especially on Sunday afternoons. Olivet Baptist Church just across the street, the Golden West Hotel hotel drew church goers to its restaurant, billiards room, ice cream parlor and candy shop. There was a thriving saloon, too (though perhaps not after church!). The barber shop was operated from 1913 to 1930 by Waldo Bogle, grandfather of former television news anchor and Portland City Commissioner Dick Bogle. Closed during the Depression, the hotel now serves the homeless mentally ill. Interpretive historical displays are on either side of the entrance. www.african-american-historical-district.com/About.html

Oregon Black History Spotlight: Dick Bogle

Dick Bogle was a landmark reporter and politician. Born in Portland in 1930, his father descended from an early Oregon pioneer family and his mother was well known writer and activist Kathryn Hall Bogle. Dick attended OSU and Vanport College before taking a job as a music reporter at The Oregonian in 1952. From 1959 to 1967, Bogle worked as a Portland police officer, but continued his newspaper work.

KATU News hired Bogle to be a correspondent, the first Black on-air reporting in Portland history. In 1973, he became the anchor for the channel’s “Eyewitness News” program. In 1984, Dick Bogle ran to replace outgoing Portland city councilor Charles Jordan and won. He would be reelected to this same office in 1988.

Bogle endeavored to represent the interests of Black Portland during his time in office and remained a prominent local figure for years after. He resumed his reporting on jazz music and hosted a radio show. From 2008-2010 Bogle was a volunteer member of Portland Police Bureau’s cold case unit, working to try and resolve unsolved murders.
