Blunt Youth Radio Project

Blunt Youth Radio Project WMPG’s Blunt Youth Radio Project brings youth together to produce audio stories that matter to them

Operating as usual

06/21/2022

King Middle Schoolers just finished up their Spring Expedition, and Blunt Youth Radio/ WMPG FM was the community partner. For this expedition, students recorded and edited short audio postcards featuring local spots around Portland, Maine. Their guiding questions for designing these pieces were: What are our favorite places in Portland and the surrounding community? How do we spread the word about these locations? They did such a fantastic job, and a selection of their work is now available to listen to >> https://www.wmpg.org/ear-scramble/

The interviews are happening for our members in the Climate workshop! Today, Quinn, a freshman audio producer, just finished an interview with The Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean founder Rachael Zoe Miller who Zoomed in from New Zealand. Rachael operates the 60-foot sailboat, American Promise, in Maine waters most summers leading expeditions that are focused on doing marine debris cleanups and acting as educators and ocean advocates. It was a great conversation where Rachael shared about how she was inspired to start her organization, how to stay hopeful in her line of work, and gave advice for young climate advocates. We will share the final audio piece once it has been edited! Thanks as always to The Nature Conservancy in Maine for supporting this climate workshop!

We just had a fantastic meeting with Julianna Bradley, one of the producers of the Inherited Podcast. Inherited is a "podcast by, for, and about the youth climate movement. We explore what the next generation plans to do with their inheritance," and Julianna was so generous with her time-- sharing about her process producing audio stories, answering questions from the group, and talking about how she's looking forward to experimenting more with her podcast and audio into the future. Here's just a snapshot of her behind-the-scenes story boarding for an episode of Inherited. We'll share some snippets from our discussion later, so stay tuned! Thanks as always to The Nature Conservancy in Maine for sponsoring this program!

It's always good to take some time and go through the journalistic code of ethics before everyone dives into interviewing for their individual audio projects! We've got some great topics we're working for the Climate Activism Workshop including composting and food waste, fast fashion, marine pollution, and how climate change impacts BIPOC and low-income communities. Thanks again to The Nature Conservancy in Maine for supporting this workshop. If you want to peruse the SPJ code of ethics, you can access the document here >> https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp

We just finished our third meeting for Blunt's Climate Activist Workshop, and are learning how to import audio clips into Hindenburg and get a sense of the editing tools and layout of this DAW. Next everyone is going to edit together their own audio piece and then share each interpretation of the same source files. We'll also be sharing finished audio pieces as we produce them. Thanks again to The Nature Conservancy in Maine for supporting this program.

Guess what? After 24 years, almost to the day, Blunt Youth Radio is moving to TUESDAY NIGHTS, same time: 7:30 to 8:30 pm, same place: WMPG FM. It's really great for us because we will have a workday before the show to plan. Tonight we're listening to an archive from 2014 about Masculinity but nest week we go live with a look into the future asking WHAT IF...? Here's one to get you started: what if... teenagers had a regular voice in the mainstream media?
