We Can't Stop Wildfires—But Here's How We Live With Them

Are you ready for the natural disasters that happen in your area? We're in the middle of producing a series for PBS about them, how to prepare, and how climate change is affecting things. It's sciency, riveting, and focused on positive things we can DO today for harm reduction and preparation.

The first one is about wildfire because now is the PERFECT time to get ready for next fire season.

There is beauty in a burned landscape. Moss is growing and tiny trees push rocks out of their way as the spring rain brings them up from the soil. New habitat is born in the Columbia River Gorge where fires burned hot last fall.

Follow us for updates on the burn area recovery and coverage of the 2018 fire season.

We produce video for non-profits and companies changing the world and the way we interact with it. Contact us to collaborate.

Clearcut the Columbia River Gorge?

With a fire season like the one we had this year in the NW, there are so many questions unanswered. Politicians using disaster to push their agenda, locals displaced and livelihoods impacted are just some of the results. This video features some of the best available science and responses to forest fires in the region. Please check it out and share!

Mount Hood

Mt Hood is amazing. But did you know current wilderness areas were nearly turned into a Whistler style mega-resort THREE DIFFERENT TIMES?? Come check out a film we produced about the life of Kate McCarthy, an instrumental and inspirational figure who helped Oregonians decide the fate of Mt Hood & the Columbia River Gorge for more than five decades.

Next Sunday (3/19) 7:30 The Hollywood Theatre presents Women Working for the Wild / Portland EcoFilm Festival

Part of the Portland Ecofilm Festival with production/editing by Sara Quinn, Trip Jennings and Ralph Bloemers. Featuring: Amy Wheeler Harwood and many more.

Pronghorn's are amazing! They're North America's fastest land mammal and can travel at up to 55mph. I shot these photos just after sunrise yesterday while working on a documentary on ecosystem recovery at Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge after cattle grazing was stopped in 1990. The recovery is as amazing as the antelope. I'm excited to share more soon! #natureisawesome #antelope #hartmountain

On a dive near Cayo Caulker I spent a bout 25 minutes with this lady while she munched in the sea grass. Then the light got great just before sunset. Most of it was video but I snapped a couple of photos. Isn't she beautiful?! Petty fun day in the office! If you look real closely you can see a jelly fish being eaten by an anemone. Pretty damn cool. We've been working with Divers Institute of Technology for a few years now and always look forward to producing great underwater content for their commercials and YouTube channel. Great team to work with!

"It doesn't even look like a forest!"

Brenna Bell is an amazing person to walk in the woods with. Here's a very emotional and intimate moment with her in a place she knows and cares about very deeply. We just made this as a follow up to our last project with Bark and hope folks will share far and wide.

Yolks and Spokes

Personal projects are awesome! Here's a cool write up on an awesome bike trip that Balance Media's Sara Quinn did this spring. Breakfast culture on the Mississippi?!? Yes please.

Dana Bialek and Sara Quinn biked down the Mississippi for their dual project, "Yolks and Spokes." They sat down with strangers for breakfast and found out how (and why) they took their eggs.

The Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center and the surrounding old growth forest burned in the Beachie Creek fire. The team flew in after the smoked cleared to assess the fire's impact and winterize the remaining infrastructure. Fly in with the team and see for yourself how the forest fared and hear their reaction. Please share, comment and consider helping them re-establish camp at Jawbone: http://opalcreek.org/donate Thanks to Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, Meyer Memorial Trust, Trip Jennings & Crag Law Center, Balance Media
While we are all focused on taking care of the people and communities impacted by the fires, we are also desperate for hope. Yesterday, the Oregon Department of Forestry stated they believe that the ancient forests of Opal Creek experienced a mosaic burn, and that they are cautiously optimistic that at least a good portion of the forest is green and will provide a seed source for the burned areas! The first photo below is from immediately after the smoke cleared from the 2017 Eagle Creek fire. (Credit Balance Media) Many early reports said all was lost within the 50,000 acre fire perimeter, and later it turned out that only 8,000 acres burned at high intensity. The second photo is from Opal Creek. (Courtesy @JohnathonGatewood) @emergegorgeous
The Eagle Creek fire burned across 50,000 acres, yet as we approach the third anniversary of the fire - we learn that the forest is alive and well, full of wildlife, wildflowers and the trails are being expertly restored by people who love the Gorge. The Eagle Creek trail is still CLOSED, and will be open soon. Please respect all closures. Leave no trace, and even consider picking up after others. This is your Gorge, please take care of it.
