SPACE WALRUS by Kevin L. Donihe
Space: the final frontier... these are the voyages of... a walrus?

Check out this fan-favorite award-winning novel, now available on Kindle!

Meet Walter. He is the first walrus in a revolutionary space program. Someday, his blubbery form will float past asteroids, stars, and planets as he journeys through the dark beyond to become a Master of Space. But for now, Walter's dream is to win the heart of his lifelong love, Dr. Stephanie, who happens to be the scientist assigned to conduct experiments on him. The problem is Dr. Stephanie does not love Walter. She views him as a test subject and nothing more. To make matters worse, Dr. Stephanie appears to be in love with the abusive head scientist, Dr. Ron.

From Wonderland Book Award winner Kevin L. Donihe comes a tragic comedy of unrequited love and inspired determination.

Readers recommend Night of the As****es by Kevin L. Donihe. This humorous parody is the perfect book for horror fans curious about exploring the bizarro fiction genre.

"The As****es are coming to get you, Barbara . . . From Wonderland Award Winner Kevin L. Donihe, comes a hilarious tribute to Night of the Living Dead A plague of as****es is infecting the countryside. Normal everyday people are transforming into jerks, snobs, dicks, and do******gs. And they all have only one purpose: to make your life a living hell."

"This book is a parody of George Romero's zombie classic, but this is not the kind of parody that would feature Leslie Nielsen in the film adaption. Beyond the humorous premise and outstanding cover art, there is little humor to be found in this story, which wonders if, in the face of a worldwide epidemic of douchebaggery, is it possible to remain civil? If the entire world was overrun by a--holes, would there be any chance for kindness to survive?" Steve Lowe, Muscle Memory

One of our favorite things about reading bizarro fiction is the fantastical worlds into which we can escape. What's your favorite bizarro fiction world? It is Carlton Mellick's planet of flesh in Teeth & Tongue Landscape? It is the surreal dystopia of S.T. Cartledge's The Orphanarium? The kaiju apocalypse in Jeff Burk's Super Giant Monster Time? Or the bizarre fairy tale Kingdom of Teeth by The Sisters of Slaughter. TELL US YOUR FAVORITE BIZARRO WORLD!

Don't you love when you read a book that puts into words a thought or feeling that you relate to strongly and have never been able to express? Or even better, when you read something so beautifully strange that it inspires you to imagine even stranger things?

Some people have asked about our submissions window. You may have noticed that we are currently closed to submissions. Usually, we open a window to submission from April-June. But due to Covid-19, our timeline has been disrupted, and we are not ready to look at or accept any new manuscripts at this time. We may open a submissions window later this year once we get caught up.

Thank you for your interest and understanding. Keep writing bizarro!

Today's random book stack. A mix of horror and bizarro.

A body swap story where people switch bodies with the last person they had s*x with (Muscle Memory by Steve Lowe). A collection of bizarro short stories about alienation and love (Die You Doughnut Bastards by Cameron Pierce). A Clerks parody with a kaiju Kevin Smith (I'm Not Even Supposed To Be Here Today by Brian Asman). A buddy-cop comedy starring a Bigfoot detective with anger management issues (Bigfoot Cop by Kevin Shamel). Another Bigfoot story, but this one a splatterpunk gore-soaked urban legend (The Lucky Ones Died First by Jack Bantry). A hardcore slasher set in a surreal alternate world (Slaughterhouse High by Robert Devereaux). And a collection of hilarious, lyrical, surreal bizarro stories (Sorry I Ruined Your O**y by Bradley Sands).

It’s been 7 months...and winter is looming. Mental health issues related to our lockdown and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression and other mental health disorders. The relapse and overdose rate had increased by 30% since March 2020. There is help available.

In the U.S. NAMI, The National Alliance on Mental Health has a 24-hour helpline: 800-950-6264.

In the U.K. call the NHS urgent mental health hotline or you can text "SHOUT" to 85258 to contact the Shout Crisis Text Line, or text "YM" if you're under 19, to talk to a trained volunteer at the free listening service.

Your Local Bookstore Wants You to Know That It’s Struggling

Local bookshops enrich neighborhoods in many ways beyond just book retail. They are community resources and meeting places, they host events, and they are passionate about literacy, about books, and about people who love reading. This important part of the literary community needs your help right now!

Here are a few suggestions:
1. Mail order directly from their website if they have one.
2. Make a donation or support their fundraising efforts
3. Attend their online events and promote them
4. Order books through Bookshop.org (link in comments)

Independent booksellers are desperate for customers to return, and not just for an online reading.

Was wondering if the folks at Eraserhead would give a shout-out for this, based on the premise that Anais Nin was a bored Ballard housewife in pre-grunge Seattle? You can read the first couple pages for free--seems Bizarro as hell to me, but what do I know?...https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08WZMB9LN/ref=sr_1_1?Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.x=27&Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.y=16&dchild=1&qid=1613990828&refinements=p_27%3Adavid%20fewster&s=books&sr=1-1&unfiltered=1&fbclid=IwAR2gFrGvLWwd9XD0jzjucnuL5c3UO0-kOye5K_6zmCTgFzbufQC6XX3PwxA

I didn't know this! Same as Richard Linklater! Same as ... well, a lot of people.

Trivia
One of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films was Eraserhead (1977), directed by David Lynch. Kubrick cited the film as a creative influence during the making of this movie, and screened it to put the cast and crew in the mood he wanted to achieve for the film.
Incredible!!!!!!
Flashbytes gives a shout-out to Bizarro Central and Brian Auspice -
New Portland literary series, Ghostland, wants your bizarre submissions...

Ghostland seeks powerful storytellers, skilled personal necromancers and speakers of impactful, haunting tales that speak to the theme of Ghosts. Those inspired by the wind-whispered messages that appear to us from earth and beyond, we call on you!

Ghostland is a monthly performance based literary series with revolving themes, hosted by Ophelia Darkly and Jen Scholten. The debut event, Ghostland: Ghosts, will take place the evening of March 18th, 2018 at The Crush Bar.

What’s Unique About Ghostland?

All writers will be paid for their performances; payment is dependant upon donations at the door.

The purpose of this series is to fill a void that currently exists in the Portland literary realm. As writers and artists, it has been difficult to find literary reading spaces and events consistently devoted to curating specific, themed readings that manage to effectively speak to the shared subjective experience. We would like to be able to provide this outlet for other writers in the community, and also, for an audience seeking a thoughtful engagement with like-minded peers.

We are looking specifically for literary works that fit the theme of Ghosts and incorporate elements of performance art. Each performer will be given 10-15 minutes on stage.

Submissions

We are open to accepting works in progress, as well as completed works, but suggest that you submit both written and visual components (video/audio/media) with the subject title “Ghostland: Ghosts - Submission - Your Name” to [email protected] no later than February 28th.

The venue requires all performers to be 21+.

The Artists

Jen Scholten is a poet, imagist and the sole creator of Ghost of Earth, an evolving two-way mirror and working catalyst of darkness and light. Ghost of Earth’s work is consistently connected to nature, the human experience and unexplored territories within the physical and psychic worlds. Jen spent two years attending, absorbing photographing and reviewing multimedia and performance art for various theaters, festivals and artists throughout the city with Thru Media LLC., (a Portland-born creative arts magazine). She is currently filling her time with the editing of her first book of poetry, designing endless illustration/photography works and in working with fellow artists to develop meaningful projects and communities together.

Ophelia Darkly is a shapeshifter, word conjurer, and dream weaver, originating from a strange place known as Chicago. At the age of six, she began writing weird tales in the dusty corners of a peach coloured room and hasn’t stopped since. She graduated from The University of Iowa where she earned degrees in Theatre & Creative Writing. Her work often takes the form of fractured fairytales, exploring mirrors of duality, the supernatural, whimsical wonderlands, and beyond. She wishes to create a space where artists can inspire one another and see their dreams manifest in the physical realm.
What happened to CM3's Stacking Doll that had a release date of January 2018? It was on Amazon for a little while, but has disappeared and now the only pre-order for his books is one coming out in the summer.
Any plans to bring Electric Jesus Co**se back into print again?
Hello. :) I have a question that I haven't been able to figure out an answer to. What is Bizarro fiction? I've read the descriptions, but they don't really tell me what it is. I used to avoid it, because I wouldn't care for 'weird for weird's sake," but I enjoy stuff with weird elements. As I've looked over the various books listed, some sound interesting, but not really what I'd think of as bizarre.

Now, I just ordered and received The Big Meat yesterday, so I am going to be getting into that soon, but why is that Bizarre? To me, it sounds like a very straightforward story. An interesting angle that has never really been explored, but not really super weird.

So what is Bizarro? :)
