Fetch Your Monocle! The Portland Book Festival Is Bringing In-Person Author Events Back!

"Essential viewing for anyone who cares about Portland" says the Merc about tomorrow's event for Loaners feat. Laura Moulton, Ben Hodgson, and Karen Russell.

I knew the pandemic isolation had really gotten dire when I started missing everything about in-person author events, including those inevitable nine words that can sink an otherwise good time: “This is more of a comment than a question.” Yikes! But it turns out, after many months without live a...

In case you missed Tuesday's book release for LOANERS hosted by Powell's, the recording of the conversation between Laura Moulton and Omar El Akkad is well worth an hour of your time.

ps Omar is a superstar whose new novel WHAT STRANGE PARADISE is a finalist for the Giller Prize! He's also a great interviewer:

In 2011, Laura Moulton founded Street Books, a bicycle-powered lending library serving folks living outside in Portland, Oregon. That summer, Ben Hodgson bec...

In the 1960s and 1970s, scientists performed testicular radiation experiments on inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Now, a current inmate wonders if those who work in the prison laundry facility are being placed in an equally dangerous situation.

The Oregon Department of Corrections Amid Covid-19 — Propeller

Required reading: an inmate at the Oregon State Penitentiary describes a worrisome lack of response to the ongoing pandemic. Unfortunately, the prison's laissez faire attitude will likely impact the public health of the entire state. As Michael Kell so artfully puts it: "Prisons are not self-contained, closed systems."

Such a thrill to see Martha Grover in today's NY Times!!! Cheryl Strayed singles out "The End of My Career" as her "favorite book no one else has heard of" 🎈🎈🎈

As a girl, the author of “Wild” and “Tiny Beautiful Things” spent hours studying Scholastic book club catalogs. But “my family was too poor to pay for the books,” she says.

In which Stranger in the Pen is called a "Fabergé egg of a book" and held up against Musalaheen, a great new memoir from our friends over at University of Hell.

A Fabergé egg of a book, huh? Maybe it's time to rethink our prices.....

Two new memoirs illustrate the expanse and variability of conflict, as well as the infinite variety of human experience.

Demanding to be seen in a faceless bureaucracy

We're grateful to Oregon ArtsWatch for this nuanced and generous review of Stranger in the Pen:

"One of the quiet pleasures of this book, something that isn’t about plot or structure or anything that moves along the story to the next destination, is the opportunity to learn about Asem's own family in Kuwait; to recognize that just like my family, they drink tea and play cards, chide each other, and marvel at sea shells. And, like people everywhere, they worry about having a safe haven."

Mohamed Asem is a man between countries and cultures, which puts him squarely at odds with bureaucratic systems that crave neat little scribbled-in circles. When everything is carefully defined, th…

Tom Hanks takes his latest role, author and Portland Book Festival star, very seriously

Well this is a wonderfully surreal paragraph to wake up to:

" ... here he is in a backstage interview after his talk, poring over the festival's author lineup like any other bookworm. "Mohamed Asem. 'Stranger in the Pen,' " he says, his finger stopping at the name of a Portland author. Told that "Stranger in the Pen" is based on Asem's experience being detained at a London airport, Hanks says, "That sounds interesting." Maybe it'll become one of the titles he passes along to his staff. "I drive my staff nuts because I'll read about something and say, 'Get that, get that,' " he says."

The movie star discussed his short story collection, "Uncommon Type," at the literary festival Saturday.

18 authors to check out at the 2018 Portland Book Festival

The Oregonian highlights Mohamed Asem as one of the authors to check out at this year's Book Festival:

"In 2016, Asem was detained overnight upon arrival at London's Gatwick Airport for a reason no immigration official would specify.... Asem, now a Portlander, uses this haunting incident as a springboard for 'Stranger in the Pen,' a pensive reflection on identity and belonging."

The Portland Book Festival, formerly known as Wordstock, brings more than 100 authors to downtown Portland Nov. 10.

Largehearted Boy: Mohamed Asem's Playlist for His Memoir "Stranger in the Pen"

Mohamed Asem shared a playlist for his memoir Stranger in the Pen over at Largehearted Boy. Thanks to David Gutowski for giving so many authors the chance to reveal how music influences their work, and also for these generous words re: Mohamed's debut:

"Stranger the Pen is much more than the story of his airport detention, this important book is a treatise on identity and culture."

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book.
