What a day at the book fest! It was fantastic seeing so many familiar faces passing by our table. And three cheers to Literary Arts for helping our books find so many new readers, including maybe possibly Tom Hanks.
Well this is a wonderfully surreal paragraph to wake up to:
" ... here he is in a backstage interview after his talk, poring over the festival's author lineup like any other bookworm. "Mohamed Asem. 'Stranger in the Pen,' " he says, his finger stopping at the name of a Portland author. Told that "Stranger in the Pen" is based on Asem's experience being detained at a London airport, Hanks says, "That sounds interesting." Maybe it'll become one of the titles he passes along to his staff. "I drive my staff nuts because I'll read about something and say, 'Get that, get that,' " he says."
The movie star discussed his short story collection, "Uncommon Type," at the literary festival Saturday.
The Oregonian highlights Mohamed Asem as one of the authors to check out at this year's Book Festival:
"In 2016, Asem was detained overnight upon arrival at London's Gatwick Airport for a reason no immigration official would specify.... Asem, now a Portlander, uses this haunting incident as a springboard for 'Stranger in the Pen,' a pensive reflection on identity and belonging."
The Portland Book Festival, formerly known as Wordstock, brings more than 100 authors to downtown Portland Nov. 10.
