About the Workshop
Sound design might not be the first thing you notice when watching a film, TV show, or commercial, but it is one of the most crucial elements within media. From dialog capture on set through final sound design and mix; each part of the process requires both learned skills and attention to detail. In this introductory workshop we will discuss what Production and Post Sound Mixers do, how the roles relate, and pathways into those careers. This class will cover the basics of the sound team structure and include examples of professional audio equipment, industry standard software and approaches to common scenarios on and off set.

About the Instructor
Troy Micheau is a Production Sound Mixer, Boom Operator and Post Sound Editor based in Oregon. His career in sound began with recording and mixing music before moving into post and production sound for video. He has captured audio for narrative, commercial and documentary projects (both union and non) throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond while mixing features, shorts and digital media for Portland’s filmmakers and producers. He has a Bachelors in Education that he thought he’d never use and is happy to share his knowledge with up and coming sound people!

ABOUT THE CLASS
You’re ready to make your film, yay! Now you’re moving into prep, but what does a
director do in prep? This workshop focuses on demystifying different tools that a director can use in preproduction to be ready for day one. We will focus on script analysis (what is it and how to do it most effectively), touch on how to prep for rehearsals, location scouts, crew meetings, shot-lists and pre-visualize your film, and lastly how best a director can practice self care - to sustain throughout the director’s journey.

BIO
Karina Lomelin Ripper is a Mexican-American writer and director whose films focus on the rebels, misfits, and rule-breakers, characters who push against society or institutions, in order to stay true to themselves. She was selected for a coveted spot in the AFI Directing Workshop for Women+ class of 2025. In the program, she directed her coming-of-age short film There’s a Devil Inside Me. Her previous narrative short, a gothic horror, creature film, Chispa, was
supported by Fujifilm and won the award for Best Oregon Filmmaker at the
McMinnville Film Festival 2025 and Audience Award at the Rise Showcase 2024. She is a 2024 writer and director fellow of the Hola Mexico’s: Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today. Her films have received a Vimeo Staff Pick, premiered on PBS, MTV Tr3s and No Budge and screened at numerous festivals all over the globe. Karina splits her time between Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon, where she enjoys growing flowers and camping with her partner and pup.

Portland Panorama is coming up April 10th-20th and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see this festival kick off in our city. They have curated an incredible line up of international, national, and local films, parties and panels across the ten days. Get your tickets!

Desert Island Studios produced short films Empano Gleasium (world premiere!), Color Theories, as well as our Music Videos for Y La Bamba and Sleater-Kinney are all screening at the fest.

In addition, Desert Island Studios supported projects Chispa, Hrafnamynd, Navidad De Reserva, Baby Tooth, Trash Baby, and Controlling the Narrative will be screening. These filmmakers, casts, and crews have produced incredible works that you won’t want to miss. And we are very thankful to for featuring their work.

Island Highlight 🌴💥 Featuring Director Roberta Cumbianchera and AD Maria Moreno .mmoreno at the East Coast premiere of Navidad De Reserva at the New York Latino Film Festival , one of the largest Latino film festivals in the U.S.

The film crew spent a week in New York, attending events at Warner Bros and NBC Universal and networking with Latino programmers and filmmakers from all over the world.

Join us Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 6PM to 9PM at Desert Island Studios.

Through an overview of the film festival landscape, annual deadlines, and mapping a strategic plan for festival application, outreach, acceptance, attendance, and marketing, film professionals who attend this workshop can learn how to uplevel their chance at success on the festival circuit. This workshop will impart participants with a clear understanding of what it takes to organize and enact a plan to make the most out of their film festival journey, while networking with other local filmmakers poised for success.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

About The Teacher
Bojana Sandic is a film festival programmer with an enthusiasm for authentic voices. She is currently Programming Director of NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, where she is focused on connecting emerging filmmakers with new audiences, industry knowledge and opportunities. Formerly the Director of Short Film Programming at the Newport Beach Film Festival, she maintains a love of shorts as a medium for storytelling. She is based in Portland, OR and has worked in short film development and has served on film festival juries including those of Slamdance, Outfest and Palm Springs Shortfest.
