Journalist, Teacher and Rookie Teacher of the Year Awards are now accepting nominations.

Students of OJEA members are eligible to compete in the Oregon High School Journalist of the Year contest. The winner receives a $1,000 scholarship, and we are thrilled to bring back a $500 scholarship for the first runner up this year.

Students can find detailed instructions at www.OregonJEA.org.

Applicant portfolios are due by Feb. 15, 2020.

The Mary Hartman Foundation Oregon Journalism Teacher of the Year award is also currently open and closes on Feb. 15, 2020. Nominations are accepted from principals, professional journalists, fellow teachers, or students. Individuals may also self-nominate.

Also due Feb. 15 are nominations for the Rookie Teacher of the Year award. Any media adviser in their first two years of advising is eligible.

Congratulations!!!

The Oregon Journalism Education Association(OJEA) and Northwest Scholastic Press(NWSP) announced that South Albany High School Teacher Trisha Farver has been named the 2019 Mary Hartman Journalism Teacher of the Year.

Farver was awarded the award during her journalism class last week by Journalism Education Association(JEA) state director Brian Eriksen.

“Trisha has a long track record of doing great journalism at South Albany High School,” Eriksen said.

Ms. Farver advises the SAHS journalism program, which includes the Yearbook, Newspaper, and news website. She also earned the Rookie Adviser of the Year in 2011.

The award is named for Mary Hartman, a University of Oregon Journalism School faculty member and former director of Oregon Scholastic Press. The winner receives a cash award which is paid by an endowment from the Hartman family.

The Journalism Education Association has developed a free online training designed to serve as a guide to the experience of judging student media for contests or critiques. The course, “Critique training: You be the judge,” provides an opportunity for new and experienced judges to gain professional development and earn a badge as a certified judge.
