Did you know there might be something growing in your neighborhood? Chances are you might have plant species within steps of your front door, in your yard, on the curb, and in your local park!

Thousands of years ago, humans used to for plants and hunt whatever animals they could find. Recently this activity has gained popularity again with people revisiting looking to experts for tips on what's safe to pick and consume.

John Kallas is a trained botanist, nature photographer, researcher, teacher, speaker, and author of Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods From Dirt to Plate. He runs the Wild Food Adventures Outdoor School based in Oregon where he teaches the general public about edible wild plants and other foragables. In our last episode, we talked about potential solutions for solving our economy's biggest problems, from changing overproduction practices and revamping policies that currently discard usable items in the trash.

We're excited to bring on Qiting Fang, an innovative designer curious about the way people interact with the world and thinking about solutions to waste generated from everyday products. How can we transform our relationship with and shift away from the conventional throwaway culture?

Many initiatives are sprouting across communities and neighborhoods to help people move away from automatically either throwing away usable goods or offloading them to nonprofits that are overwhelmed with donated items.

Online community groups such as and forums allow fellow neighbors to post once-loved goods up for grabs and others to post (ISO) items.

Neighborhood accounts help keep usable furniture and other discarded items from getting landfilled.

Community fridges are also popping up to help food-insecure individuals get access to needed staple items!
