Last but not least! We conclude our Hispanic Heritage Month series by visiting Taquería los Puñales in our home city of Portland, Oregon 📍
Taquería los Puñales blends traditional Mexican taco-making with a proud, queer identity. Opened by David Madrigal and his business partner, Brian Aster, on Southeast Belmont Street, the restaurant has quickly become a sanctuary of exemplary guisado-style tacos that honor Madrigal's third-generation taquero heritage.
With tortillas made fresh in-house daily, patrons can indulge in a variety of complexly braised meats and vegetables, such as carnitas, barbacoa, and chicken tinga, all stemming from family recipes that Madrigal learned from his mother, originally from Zacatecas. Los Puñales has not just brought new flavors to the neighborhood but also introduced curveballs like adobada, showcasing the diversity of Mexican street tacos 🌮
Next on our #HispanicHeritageMonth series, we head to the SOFA Arts District neighborhood in Santa Rosa, CA to spotlight Café Frida Gallery!
Café Frida Gallery is owned and operated by Mamadou Diouf and well-known Santa Rosa artist Mario Uribe. This unique cafe and art gallery combo features artwork from local Sonoma County artists while serving a menu with nostalgic themes from both owners' native countries: France and Mexico.
Their menu features local fresh ingredients and special sandwiches, salad nicoise, Mexican molletes, their in-house baked goods and more. An expansive patio and stage lends itself to safe outdoor dining and special live music on the weekends that have proven very popular and helped make Café Frida Gallery the place to be.
