Today we would like to show our appreciation for Jess Lalumiere, a private chef and owner of The Upbeet Ginger. Last week, Gary’s House was filled with the warmth of a homemade meal, thanks to her incredible generosity. Jess regularly volunteers her time and culinary expertise to prepare delicious meals for the families staying with us.

Her thoughtful and nourishing dishes bring comfort and smiles to everyone here, reminding us of the power of good food to lift spirits. We’re so grateful for community members like Jess, who go above and beyond to make a difference. Thank you, Jess, for sharing your passion and kindness with us!

This week, representatives from Kennebunkport Resort Collection (KRC) visited Gary’s House as part of their community impact project, recognizing our work and the families we serve. We are truly honored to be chosen as a recipient of their generosity.

On behalf of everyone at Gary’s House, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to KRC for their incredible $30,000 donation. This meaningful gift will directly support families facing medical crises, providing them with a warm and supportive environment, and access to essential resources while their loved ones receive care.

This February, we honor Black History Month by recognizing the profound and historic contributions of Black leaders and advocates who have not only shaped the world but also healthcare, hospitality, and community services. Their dedication and resilience inspire the work we do every day.

At Gary’s House, we believe in the power of community and the strength that comes from supporting one another. As we reflect on this month’s significance, we celebrate the individuals and families who have paved the way for a more inclusive and caring world.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” At Gary’s House, we strive to answer that question everyday by providing a place of comfort and care for those in need.

“Gary’s House is more than just a place to stay; it is a sanctuary for families like ours who are facing some of life’s toughest battles.” – Jerry P.

Recently, Jerry shared his story with the Gary’s House team, and we are honored to share it with you. Over the past three years, Jerry and his family have faced unimaginable challenges—from his wife’s life-threatening heart attack to her heart transplant and battle with COVID that brought them back to Portland on numerous occasions. Through it all, Gary’s House became a haven for them, offering not just a place to stay, but also a sense of community and hope. In Jerry’s own words, “What touched my heart was the welcome we received for our children and grandchildren at Gary’s House. It brought us comfort to know that they could be close to their mother and grandmother during such an uncertain time.” Today, Jerry and his family still stay at Gary’s House when they need to return to Portland for his wife’s follow-ups. They even have been known to surprise our staff with flowers and cards to show their appreciation.

We are deeply moved by Jerry’s story and grateful for the opportunity to serve families like his. Gary’s House exists because of the vision of Gary Pike and the unwavering dedication of so many who believe in supporting families through life’s toughest moments.

As we wrap up 2024, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact your support has had on Gary’s House. This year, we were privileged to welcome 355 different guests from 246 families, providing a home away from home during life’s most challenging moments.

Our longest stay this year was 85 nights, with guests traveling from near and far — the farthest being British Columbia. Thanks to your generosity, they found a warm, safe place to rest and focus on what matters most; their loved ones’ care and recovery.

Thank you for being part of our community and helping us provide comfort to those in need. Together, we’ve made a difference, and we look forward to continuing this mission in 2025!
